The Author's Style -- Commentary -- Bibliography -- Grammatical Index -- (Excerpt:) PREFACE AND SUMMARY: M Ty study of Pseudo-Xenophon's treatise on the constitution of the Athenians was first prompted by my old teacher, Dr. Karl Hude, later headmaster of the Metropolitan School of Copen-hagen, who some time in 1930 lent me Kirchhoff's edition of the pamphlet, adding that this was probably something that would specially interest me. Although I have later experienced the truth of his words, the treatise at a first reading did not arouse any special interest in me. This was due to Kirchhoff's very heavy-handed treatment of the text, which by numerous hiatuses came to appear as nothing but confused bits. Not until several years after Dr. Hude's death, in the summer of 1938, did I return to Pseudo-Xenophon, this time on the basis of Marchant's Oxford edition, and already at the first reading I was exceedingly fascinated by the setting of the problems by the treatise, and this interest did not diminish after I had studied Kalinka's large edition and all other accessible literature on the matter. It appears from every line of the treatise that it was written by an opponent of democracy, but nevertheless all the arguments are in defence of both the foreign and the home policy of the democracy, not least of the imperialism of the sea-power of Athens. In this connexion a multitude of problems arose: When was the treatise written? Where was it written? Who wrote it? What was his purpose by writing the treatise? The purpose of the present work is that of showing that the treatise dates from the time before the Peloponnesian War, that it is a consistent exponent of the defensive theory by which Pericles supported his policy against the land-power of Sparta, that it was written outside Attica, that the author was an emigrant who had formerly been connected with the Attic navy, and finally that the tendency of the treatise is characterized by the emigrant's irritation at the large number of erroneous opinions set forth against those in power in Athens. To this is added a demonstration of the connexion of the treatise with the early Sophistic School, to state it more precisely, Prota-goras. In order to determine the type of argumentation of this "earliest Attic prose work" in more detail, all the arguments of the treatise have been dissected in a special investigation, which shows the author's purely logical-experimental attitude towards the social and political problems he is discussing. In a special investigation of the style the points of contact with the Pre-Gor-gian written language are demonstrated. The translation from the Danish edition which has been kindly prompted by the interest of the editors of "Classica et Mediaeva-lia" and by the subvention of the "Rask-Ørsted Foundation", has been made by Niels Haislund, M. A., who also in amiable colla-boration with myself has taken his part of the responsibility for the translation of the text of Pseudo-Xenophon. Other Greek authors, however, have been quoted from the editions in the Loeb Classical Library. Finally I want to offer my heartfelt thanks to my daughter, Irene Fuglsang, B. A., and my son-in-law, Peter Fuglsang, M. A., for their indefatigable assistance at the preparation for the printing of the Danish original, partly in giving good advices with regard to technical problems of edition, partly in the preparation of biblio-graphy and indexes.
