Includes introduction by Stella Matalon and an essay by Franco Russoli from 1961 originally written as an introduction to the book, Pinacoteca di Brera, published by the Cassa di Risparmio delle Provincie Lombarde. Most illustrations are thumbprint sized, with larger illustrations of more prominent pieces. NOT Ex-library. NO remainder marks. [From introduction] La preparazione di questo Catalogo era tra i lavori che più stavano a cuore a Franco Russoli prima della sua morte. Doveva essere una introduzione al suo nuovo Museo, e nessuno dei suoi collaboratori si e sentito di sostituirsi a lui. È parso perciò opportuno riprodurre un suo testo del 1961 di introduzione al volume, oggi pressoché introvabile, la Pinacoteca di Brera, edito a cura della Cassa di Risparmio delle Provincie Lombarde, che qui si ringrazia. È chiaro che il punto di vista espresso molti anni fa da Russoli ha ora un valore di testimonianza passata: ad essa va aggiunto il vasto lavoro critico e organizzativo che egli aveva svolto anche in campo internazionale. Dal 1961 ad oggi il Museo si è accresciuto di opere acquistate o donate. Tra esse si ricordano il Cristo Giudice di Giovanni da Milano, l'incoronazione della Vergine di Nicolò di Pietro; le carte da tarocchi miniate da Bonifacio Bembo; il Teseo e il Minotauro di Cima da Co - negliano; il San Francesco del Cerano, la Santa Teresa e il Cristo nell'orto di Francesco del Cairo, la Coronazione di spine del Ribera; i due Portatoli del Ceruti, infine il cospicuo gruppo di opere di artisti italiani del nostro secolo costituenti il lascito di Emilio e di Maria Jesi, e i dipinti futuristi temporaneamente depositati dalla raccolta di Riccardo e Magda Jucker. Nell'estate del 1974, Brera chiudeva la maggior parte delle sue sale di esposizione. . . . Il tempestivo acquisto nel 1972 del vicino Palazzo Citterio di via Brera, col suo giardino, aveva fatto sperare che a quella "chiusura" potesse seguire una riapertura prossima, tale da garantire alla Pinacoteca la continuità in un Museo nuovo. I lavori procedettero però con ritmo non sufficiente perché Franco Russoli ne potesse intravedere la conclusione. I quadri presentati in questo Catalogo comprendono quello che era il nucleo delle opere esposte nella Pinacoteca prima della sua chiusura: ad esse sono stati aggiunti alcuni dei dipinti più interessanti tra quelli ospitati nei suoi depositi.Non sono riprodotte altre opere di pittura del secolo ventesimo, né dipinti depositati in varie epoche presso Enti pubblici e religiosi, in Italia e all'estero. Tali pitture, delle quali è in corso l'inventario e la catalogazione scientifica, saranno pubblicate in un volume successivo. . .
