". durch seine Beteiligung an den Druchströmungsversuchen am isolierten Muskel, wurde Alexander Schmidt (1868) durch Ludwig zu Untersuchungen des damals noch völlig ungeklärten Problems der Blutgerinnung geführt. Nach seinem Weggang aus dem Leipzig Institut entdeckte Schmidt (1872) in der Blutflüssigkeit das "Gerinnungsferment" Thrombin, durch dessen weiteren Erforschungen in den folgenden beiden Jahrzehnten den Grund zu der heute als klassisch bezeichneten Blutgerinnungslehre (Morawitz, 1905) gelegt wurde. "Die Feststellung von Alexander Schmidt und Ludwig (1867), daß bei Durchströmung eines isolierten M. gastrocnemius mit defibrienierten Blut der Perfusionsdruck zunehmend erhöht werden muß, um eine konstante Durchblutung zu erzielen, kann als der erste experimentelle Hinweis auf die gefäßverengende Wirkung des (in den Blutplättchen enthaltenden und bei ihren Zerfall freiwerdenden) Serotonins angesehen werden. - Es sei an dieser Stelle besonders hervorgehoben, daß Ludwig der eiweißchemischen Forschung innerhalb der Physiologie größte Bedeutung beimaß. Schon zu seiner Züricher Zeitäußerte er in einem Brief an Du Bois-Reymond (11. August 1851): "Wir werden durch die langsamen Fortschritte unserer chemischen Kenntnisse über die Eiweißstoffe überall gehemmt; nach meiner Meinung wird erst ein neuer Tag über die Physiologie hereinbrechen, wenn man kristallisiertes Eiweiß in Händen hat, um endlich mit Schärfe die vielen merkwürden Umwandlungen und Zersetzungen studieren zu können, die es erleidet."
