They are of brown cloth with gilt titles to the spine. The boards are firm and flat; with light discolouration on front and back; spine ends a little bumped. Very good condition covers. The end papers are not the original and are tan coloured and very clean; name of previous owner and date in pencil on front free end paper. The page block is fairly ragged and rather marked. The title page does not exist and the first page starts with the 'Advertisement" from which it can be seen it is the fifth edition. The pages are tightly bound but somewhat wrinkled, lightly tanned and with stains, some foxing and marks on many of the pages. The cut edges are very tanned and a little warped. Not annotated. Fair condition and a reasonable reading copy. Rare edition.…

Fourcroy avait été chargé d'un travail sur l'instruction publique par la section de l'Intérieur du Conseil d'Etat. Il présenta un rapport sur ce sujet à son retour de sa deuxième mission. Dans ce rapport il proposait notamment de réorganiser l'enseignement des écoles primaires en y réintroduisant, entre autres mesures, l'éducation religieuse. Il souhaitait combler le vide existant entre ces écoles primaires et les écoles centrales (crées en 1795 par la loi du 3 brumaire an IV pour les élèves à partir de 12 ans), en créant les écoles secondaires dans lesquelles l'enseignement des sciences serait renforcé au détriment de matières comme le latin.
