Soft cover. Condition: New. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Rare. This handsome soft cover volume is 328 pages in length. Our copy is in brand new condition. It remains still sealed in shrink wrap. Photographs are available. "This volume is a collection of papers given at a workshop on urban development in Ancient Egypt, which was held at the AAS in November 2006. The articles cover a wide variety of themes within the frame of this general topic, and aspects of urban development are dealt with from very different points of view. The structure of specific building types (F. Doyen, S. Hendrickx), as well as the spacial (E. Czerny, I. Forstner-Mueller, M. Lehner) and social (M. Bietak, K. Spence) organisation of settlements are dealt with, including questions of settlement geography (A. Graham). Specific problems are given consideration, such as entrance protection in Nubian fortresses (C. Vogel) or the question of external supply versus self-sufficiency at a remote place like Zawiyet Umm el-Rakham on the Libyan border (S. Snape). One can find both the analysis of the diachronic development of a specific site throughout history (C. v. Pilgrim) and a general study on urbanism during a given period, Graeco-Roman Egypt (W. Mueller). J. Kahl's analysis of texts shows that cities in Ancient Egypt were allegorized as females with human properties. Within a chronological frame from the Old Kingdom through the Roman Empire, many different aspects of sites such as Tell el-Dabca, Giza, Kahun, Amarna, Karnak, El-Kab, Elephantine, Aswan and Zawiyet Umm el-Rakham are discussed".…

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. This volume presents the tombs and burial customs of the second millennium B.C. located in the Eastern suburb of Tell el-Dabca, ancient Avaris, the capital of the Hyksos. This suburb, Area A/II, is dominated by a sacred precinct with temples of Egyptian and Near Eastern types, as well as cemeteries. The inhabitants of Avaris are predominately Asiatic in origin, and therefore their tombs are of significant interest to scholars of Levantine archaeology. Since their first appearance, the tombs within these cemeteries are notable by the presence of both Egyptian and Asiatic elements. They span a period of almost 250 years from the Late Middle Kingdom until the beginning of the 18th Dynasty. This volume is divided into two parts: Part 1 "Auswertungen und Betrachtungen" presents the funerary architecture, the spatial distribution of the tombs within the cemeteries, the burials themselves and their offerings. The chapter on the tomb offerings focuses on the pottery, which mainly originates from inside the tombs. This is followed by a description of the tombs in their respective phases, a chapter on funerary rituals and general remarks and conclusions. The second part consists of a catalogue which is arranged in chronological order, beginning with the earliest phase followed by a table of the distribution of the offering types and photo plates. This volume presents the tombs and burial customs of the second millennium B.C. located in the Eastern suburb of Tell el-Dab'a, ancient Avaris, the capital of the Hyskos.
