Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. In Stained Glass, Flora Cassen offers a deeply personal and intellectually rich exploration of Jewish life in Europe, from the shadows of the medieval past to the aftermath of the Holocaust and into the present. Blending memoir, family history, and historical analysis, she illuminates how old myths and prejudices about Jews continue to shape Jewish identity today.Drawing from her upbringing in Antwerp's Jewish community and her later life in America, Cassen weaves together historical events, family narratives, and contemporary challenges to paint a vivid portrait of Jewish experience in modern Europe. At once intimate and analytical, she reflects on childhood fears of being identified as Jewish, connecting these anxieties to the trauma of historical persecution and the Holocaust. The book also offers a comparative analysis of Jewish life in Europe and America, highlighting the vibrancy of American Judaism while acknowledging rising concerns about antisemitism in the United States. By juxtaposing these experiences, Stained Glass invites readers to reflect on the future of Jewish communities in a world that is increasingly fractured and uncertain. A poignant blend of memoir and history, Stained Glass explores Jewish identity in post-Holocaust Europe, confronting the persistence of antisemitism across generations and continents. Paperback. Condition: New. In Stained Glass, Flora Cassen traces a Jewish life shaped by family and history, moving between medieval Europe and the present to connect lived experience with the longer arc of Jewish history. Drawing on her upbringing in Antwerp's Jewish community and her grandparents' escape from Nazi-occupied Europe to the Belgian Congo, Cassen writes from within a past in which powerlessness rubbed shoulders with power. From her later life in the United States, she considers Jewish life in Europe as a mirror that reflects enduring questions about vulnerability and belonging. Stained Glass asks what it means to leave Europe behind and to encounter in American Jewish life a vitality that is strikingly beautiful yet never fully settled.

Paperback. Condition: New. It is a little known fact that as early as the thirteenth century, Europe's political and religious powers tried to physically mark and distinguish the Jews from the rest of society. During the Renaissance, Italian Jews first had to wear a yellow round badge on their chest, and then later, a yellow beret. The discriminatory marks were a widespread phenomenon with serious consequences for Jewish communities and their relations with Christians. Beginning with a sartorial study - how the Jews were marked on their clothing and what these marks meant - the book offers an in-depth analysis of anti-Jewish discrimination across three Italian city-states: Milan, Genoa, and Piedmont. Moving beyond Italy, it also examines the place of Jews and Jewry law in the increasingly interconnected world of Early Modern European politics.

Hardback. Condition: New. , when it belonged to a French family, the Lombard Haggadah was then sold in 1927 in London to the noted collector of Hebrew manuscripts Salman Schocken. Little known, the manuscript has remained in private hands ever since. It survives as the earliest stand-alone Italian Haggadah. Of the greatest rarity, it is one of three illustrated medieval Haggadahs still privately owned. Sharon Liberman Mintz, Curator of Jewish Art, The Jewish Theological Seminary, states "I have worked with Hebrew illuminated manuscripts all of my professional life, and this one stands out for its fresh, charming, and sometimes unique paintings as well as its historical importance".
