Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. First Edition of the 'Fletcher Indicatrix'. 112 pp; illus. Original cloth. Some light mottling to edges of front cover, wrinkle in cloth near upper corner of front cover (the board is not broken through). Else Very Good. 'With the Compliments of the Author' printed card laid in. '[E]xhaustive treatment of double refraction' (James G. Lunney and Denis Weaire, 'The ins and outs of conical refraction', Europhysics News, vol. 37, 2005, pp 26-29). 'The behavior of light in isotropic and anisotropic minerals can be predicted by using what is known as an optical indicatrix, the concept of which was developed in 1892 by Fletcher. This is a three-dimensional spherical or elliptical model that assumes a different form depending on the optical properties of the mineral. The behavior of light is represented by a cross section within the three-dimensional model that is perpendicular (or nearly so) to the direction of light travel; the distance from the center of the cross section to the edge of the indicatrix represents the relative magnitude of the index of refraction, which is inversely related to velocity. Thus, a sphere whose circumference is equidistant at all points from the center depicts an isotropic mineral. Conversely, in an anisotropic mineral where light is split into two mutually perpendicular rays traveling at different velocities and exhibiting different indices of refraction, the indicatrix assumes an elliptical form' (Daniel E. Kile, 'The petrographic microscope: evolution of a mineralogical research instrument', The Mineralogical Record, Nov. 1, 2003). Fletcher 'was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1889 and won the Wollaston Medal of the Geological Society in 1912' (Wikipedia). See Charles S. Sherrington, 'Address of the President, Prof. C. S. Sherrington, at the Anniversary Meeting, November 30, 1921' (Proceedings of the Royal Society of London. Series A, Containing Papers of a Mathematical and Physical Character, Vol. 100, No. 705, Jan. 2, 1922, pp. 353-366), and T. C. Phemister, 'Fletcher's indicatrix and the electromagnetic theory of light', American Mineralogist, Volume 39, Nos. 3-4, March-April, 1954, pp. 172-92).…
