Nach dem Staatsexamen in Zürich 1887 habilitierte sich Fick dort für Augenheilkunde, gründete neben seiner Praxis zusammen mit einem Kollegen eine Privatklinik und kehrte nach Kriegsausbruch 1914 nach Deutschland zurück, wo er sich als Freiwilliger meldete. Er erhielt den Professorentitel und war Chef eines Feldlazaretts an den Kriegsschauplätzen in Frankreich, Rußland und in der Türkei. Er war der Vater von Roderich Fick."
