Hardback. Condition: New. This book tells the remarkable lives of the pioneers of science - from Galileo and Newton, Faraday and Darwin, Pasteur and Marie Curie, to Einstein, Freud, Turing, and Crick and Watson. A series of seventy articles, written by an international team of distinguished scientists, historians of science and…science writers, provides an unrivalled account of the lives and personalities behind the greatest scientific breakthroughs of all time. Organized thematically, starting at the 'Universe', and moving smaller through the 'Earth' and 'Molecules and Matter' to 'Inside the Atom', with the final two sections looking at 'Life' and 'Body and Mind', it covers all the major scientific disciplines, including astronomy, biology, biochemistry, chemistry, computing, ecology, geology, medicine, neurology, physics and psychology, as well as mathematics. The Scientists will intrigue budding scientists, those fascinated by the lives of great individuals, and anyone curious to know how over the centuries we came to understand the physical world around us and inside us.

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: fine. First edition. A fine, fresh, unread as-new copy in equally fine dust jacket. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. 306 pp. with bibliography. Scarce. A biography of Enoch L. "Nucky" Johnson (1883-1968), the Republican powerhouse from Atlantic City, the "boss of the Bo…ardwalk', who dominated New Jersey politics in the early decades of the 20th century. He was brilliantly depicted as "Nucky Thompson" in the HBO miniseries "Boardwalk Empire" by actor Steve Buscemi. In real life, Johnson was the Atlantic City political boss, sheriff of Atlantic County, businessman and crime boss who dominated county, and indeed all of south Jersey and beyond, from the 1910s until the 1940s. In this lively biography, author Frank J. Ferry, who in 1958 was appointed Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New Jersey and in the 1960s represented him in a federal case, takes the liberty of recreating some of the dialogue between Nucky and others. He based these conversations on details he discussed personally with Johnson as well as on transcripts of testimony before the Senate in 1928 and from his 1941 trial.
