Later printing. Translated from the Provencal by Catherine Janvier. Introduction by Thomas A. Janvier. Later printings also include a note from the publisher which reprints letters from the author to Gladstone after the book first appeared - in his letter Gras describes the events in the novel as based on those which actually happened to his great-grandfather. This novel of the French Revolution is uncommon in its focus on the peasants of the South of France and their involvement, rather than on the aristrocracy or the leaders. Cloth. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. First American Edition. Translated from the French by Catharine A. Janvier. A VERY GOOD, bright, clean, tight copy. From the Introduction: "In all French history there is no more inspiring episode than that with which M. Gras deals in this story: the march to Paris, and the doings in Paris, of that Marseilles Battalion made up of men who were sworn to cast down "the tyrant" and who "knew how to die." And he has been as happy, I think, in his choice of method as in his choice of subject." Red cloth boards with black lettering on the front cover. 366 pages. GJ2.…
