The book was first published in English by Alfred A. Knopf, New York in 1960, and was originally published in Japanese in 1951 under the title "Tabiji". Jack…et designed by Fei Cheng-Wu. The author's real name was Kiyohiko Nojiri, Jiro Osarag being a pen name. ***Near fine in black cloth-covered boards with silver titles to the spine. The silver is still beautifully bright having been protected by the dustwrapper. The boards are clean and unmarked. No bumps or creasing. Corners sharp. Page block edges of nice and clean with just minimal foxing to the fore-edge. The binding is square with no reading lean. Spine tight. Internally also near fine with no inscriptions. Interior pages are clean with no foxing. No creases or tears. ***In a near fine colour-illustrated dustwrapper, which has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price of 21s net. The dustwrapper is complete, with just light rubbing to the extremities, mainly at the head and tail of the spine. The head of the spine is very slightly creased, but there are no serious creases, chips or tears. The front panel is slightly marked, being a pale yellow colour. Spine of dustwrapper unfaded. Dustwrapper bright. ***210mm x 135mm. 342 pages. ***'Jiro Osaragi, whose "Homecoming" was much praised in 1955, is a novelist of unusual range and power. Bound by Hunter and Foulis in Warner Chinese Panel patterned cloth with a cream spine label. Endpapers marbled at the Compton Press by Solveig Stone. Slipcase covered in dark blue Elephanthide. Copy 36 of 200 printed, signed by Alan Ayling and Duncan Mackintosh on the limitation page. [Butcher 9]. One of the earliest and most attractive productions of the Whittington Press, and the first of the press's books printed on damped handmade paper. The richly textured Warner cloth, marbled endpapers by Solveig Stone, and carefully balanced typography combine to create a particularly successful design. The use of black and blue inks throughout, together with the parallel Chinese and English texts and reproduced calligraphy, gives the book a distinctive visual rhythm appropriate to the material. The anthology spans Chinese poetry from the Tang dynasty to the twentieth century, including verses by Mao Tse-tung (Zadong) with a reproduction of his own calligraphy. An appealing detail associated with the production records is that Mary Mackintosh, daughter of the translator and herself connected with William Heinemann publications, later had an evening dress made from the remaining lengths of the striking cover cloth. Alan Ayling was active within the British literary and private-press world of the 1970s, producing translations and original poetry that found a natural home in finely printed editions such as this. The volume remains an early demonstration of the Whittington Press's skill in combining ambitious typography, unusual materials, and literary experimentation.
