L'excès et l'emphase s'apaisent : un registre plus détendu s'affirme, déterminé par le bon gout de l'esthétique rococo, qui troque le faste et la surabondance contre une…inclinaison pour les petites choses. Les espaces destinés à être décorés sont désormais surtout les pièces les plus secrètes, les boudoirs, les lieux intimes, destinés aux réunions entre amis et à la conversation. Les allégories redondantes de l'époque baroque sont remplacées par un langage plus léger, animé d'éléments naturalistes et d'ornements gracieux. Les teintes aussi s'éclaircissent : de la blancheur éblouissante relevée d'ors des stucs on passe aux tonalités pastel douces et reposantes. L'esthétique rococo induit un renversement des termes comme des valeurs : ce qui était minuscule devient grandiose. Il s'agit de la conversion « éclairée », qui fait qu'on passe de la rhétorique à l'antirhétorique. C'est l'immense intérêt de la campagne photographique à l'origine de cet ouvrage que de nous restituer et nous faire mesurer dans tous ses détails la mue considérable qu'a connu alors la Sérénissime. Qu'il s'agisse des extérieurs ou des intérieurs de la ville, Venise à cette époque a rejeté le masque du mythe, pour arborer ses véritables traits « humains». C'est un siècle qui fixe le visage de la ville par le biais du pinceau de Canaletto et qui, dans les toiles de Pietro Longhi et les comédies de Carlo Goldoni, surprend la noblesse, ainsi que la bourgeoisie et le peuple, dans leurs attitudes quotidiennes. Pour autant, ce n'est pas une époque uniforme : si d'une part elle se perd dans les cieux infinis de Tiepolo, d'autre part elle s'attarde sur les décolletés des religieuses immortalisées par Francesco Guardi. Grâce à une campagne de prise de vue et une iconographie spectaculaires, les auteurs font découvrir au lecteur un Venise différent qui ne se cantonne pas aux images suggestives de de Tiepolo et Canaletto mais s'élargit aux lieux cachés et fascinants de la vie culturelle et sociale de l'époque. Ils ouvrent les portes de palais méconnus et dévoilent les secrets de la vie quotidienne de l'aristocratie vénitienne du XVIIIe siècle, avec ses habits, ses objets de toilette, ses gouts raffinés pour le décor, pour l'art, la musique, le théâtre et la peinture. L'ultime art de vivre des années rococo avant la chute brutale de la République en 1797, victime du poids de l'Histoire.
