Includes a scholarly preface outlining key tenets of Chinese calligraphic philosophy, detailed notes on over 40 exhibited works, and a rare presentation of the artist's personal seals carved by masters such as Qi Baishi and Zhao Zhiqian. Wang Fangyu (1913 - 1997) was a celebrated Chinese calligrapher, collector, and art historian. Born in Beijing, he later emigrated to the United States, where he taught Chinese language and literature at Yale and Seton Hall University. His dynamic style of pictorial calligraphy drew inspiration from ancient script forms and the work of the 17th-century painter Bada Shanren. He was also one of the foremost collectors and scholars of Bada Shanren in the West.
