Sono animali e figure umanizzate che sentono la necessità di raccontare una storia, la loro particolare storia.Mr Baskerville è il capo di questa gang sgangherata, in forza della sua nascita nobile: è infatti il decano dei disegnatori di caratteri tipografici, quando il sapere si divulgava tramite i libri a stampa. Il suo problema è che non riesce più a staccarsi dal foglio di carta.I suoi amici non sono da meno. Animali strani come il Sotomariccio che nel corso della sua evoluzione ha scoperto il modo di non essere schiacciato dalle automobili o Smoking fish (il pesce elegante e non fumatore); ma anche animali che, pur non perdendo la loro fisionomia vedono cambiare la loro immagine consueta come il Leopardo volante (schiacciato su un vetro dopo un'acrobazia), la Volpe alcolica (bella, affascinante, sensuale ma. costantemente sbronza).Insieme a loro ricordiamo l'Olierone (con la farfalla sul naso e la testa bloccata dal torcicollo), Travel Roller (inventore del supertrolley da viaggio), Rapa Nui (costretto per la sua faccia ad assomigliare alle statue dell'Isola di Pasqua e non ne è per niente contento).E così, uno dopo l'altro, tutti hanno qualche caratteristica per la quale sicuramente si faranno ricordare.Se c'è una cosa che alla fine accomuna questi personaggi è la loro voglia di scappare. Di uscire da questo zoo di carta per vivere una vita vera. Per il momento potranno dare libero sfogo alla loro voglia di movimento con un giro tondo tondo al termine del libro.
