Von Westen aus gesehen ist Norderney die dritte der bewohnten Ostfriesischen Inseln. Norderney erstreckt sich bei einer Gesamtfläche von 26 Quadratkilometern in einer Länge von rund 14 Kilometern in Ost-West-Richtung. An den breitesten Stellen am Westkopf und in der Inselmitte dehnt sich die Insel bis zu 2,5 Kilometer in Nord-Süd-Richtung aus. Auf der gesamten Nordseite der Insel erstreckt sich ein Sandstrand von rund 14 Kilometer Länge. Die Tierwelt der Insel und des angrenzenden Wattenmeeres ist vor allem aus ornithologischer Sicht sehr artenreich. Während der Zeit des Vogelzugs rasten große Schwärme von Zugvögeln vor allem im östlichen Teil der Insel. Das Wattenmeer dient den Vogelschwärmen dabei als reichhaltige Nahrungsquelle und die Insel als Brutgebiet. Insgesamt brüten rund 95 Vogelarten auf Norderney. Von Westen aus gesehen ist Norderney die dritte der bewohnten Ostfriesischen Inseln. Norderney erstreckt sich bei einer Gesamtfläche von 26 Quadratkilometern in einer Länge von rund 14 Kilometern in Ost-West-Richtung. An den breitesten Stellen am Westkopf und in der Inselmitte dehnt sich die Insel bis zu 2,5 Kilometer in Nord-Süd-Richtung aus. Auf der gesamten Nordseite der Insel erstreckt sich ein Sandstrand von rund 14 Kilometer Länge. Die Tierwelt der Insel und des angrenzenden Wattenmeeres ist vor allem aus ornithologischer Sicht sehr artenreich. Während der Zeit des Vogelzugs rasten große Schwärme von Zugvögeln vor allem im östlichen Teil der Insel. Das Wattenmeer dient den Vogelschwärmen dabei als reichhaltige Nahrungsquelle und die Insel als Brutgebiet. Insgesamt brüten rund 95 Vogelarten auf Norderney.
