He later served as Senator from New York. Evarts is known as one of, if not the greatest legal mind of his time. As an attorney, Evarts famously served as one of the prosecutors of Jefferson Davis for treason. He also served as President Andrew Johnson's Chief Counsel during his impeachment trial. First President and founding member of the New York City Bar Association.
