Lo hicieron prisionero en agosto de 1936 por su afiliación a Izquierda Republicana, pasó por tres cárceles en Logroño y estuvieron a punto de fusilarlo. Padeció una grave enfermedad en la espalda estando prisionero y, finalmente, pudo salir al exilio en 1940 con su mujer, Teresa Castroviejo y su hijo, nacido en 1935. En Nueva York comenzó una nueva vida y aprendió inglés. Instaló una pequeña tienda de electrodomésticos y acabó trabajando para el ayuntamiento neoyorquino, encargándose de mejorar el alumbrado del barrio de Queens. Su hijo, Pedro Escobal Castroviejo, matemático, participó en la misión del Apolo XI que puso al primer hombre en la Luna. Patricio Pedro Escobal regresó a España en alguna ocasión para visitar a su madre, que siguió viviendo en Nalda hasta su fallecimiento en los años setenta. Escobal murió casi centenario en su casa de los Estados Unidos tras conocer y aceptar ilusionado la reedición de su único l.
