Dezember 1898. --- Adressiert an die optische Werkstätte R. Fuess in Berlin-Steglitz; gerichtet an Carl Leiss (1868-1940…), seit 1893 Leiter der optischen Abteilung. --- Leiss verfasste das Werk "Die optischen Instrumente der Firma R. Fuess, deren Beschreibung, Justierung und Anwendung" (Leipzig 1899). --- Geschrieben in schwer lesbarer Handschrift. --- Transkription: "Werther Herr Leiss! Ich komme morgen 21.XII. [gemeint wohl: 22.XII.] nach Berlin und werde Sie bald brauchen. Komme dann mündlich nauf die einzelnen Punkte dieser freundlichen{?} Ausstellung zurück. Die {???} werden Anfang Januar herauskommen, da die letzte Revision vorgestern an den Verleger abging. Es wäre mir {???}, einmal die Platten{?} mit dem Mikroskop bestimmen zu können. Bringe Präparat mit. {???} mit jedem Fernrohr messen. Wollen auch darauf zurückkommen. Hochachtungsvoll Ihr Wülfing." --- Über den Empfänger: Carl August Leiss wurde am 26. Januar 1868 in Adelsheim (Baden) als Sohn des Bäckermeisters Johann Gottlieb Leiß und der Sophie Elisabetha, geb. Schlotterbeck geboren und starb am 25. April 1940 bei einem Aufenthalt in Heilbronn; er wurde zwei Tage später in Adelsheim beigesetzt. Am 30. Dezember 1893 heiratete er in Berlin die Schneiderin Martha Amanda Mathilde Deininger, geboren am 21. Januar 1870 in Berlin als Tochter des Drechlers Carl Heinrich Wilhelm Deininger und der Clara Helene Amanda, geb. Kopf, gestorben am 28. Mai 1939 in Kleinmachnow. Nach dem Schulabschluß absolviert er ab 1882 in Heidelberg eine Lehre als Mechaniker. Anfang 1890 kommt Leiss über Wien zu Fuess nach Berlin. Leiss arbeitet in der optischen Abteilung und wird bereits 1893 deren Leiter. Nach dem Tod von Rudolf Fuess 1917 leitet dessen Sohn Paul die Firma. Leiss verlässt wenige Jahre darauf das Unternehmen und gründet im Mai 1921 sein eigenes Unternehmen und fertigt dort vorwiegend auf Bestellung optische Instrumente. Mit Datum vom 14. August 1924 wird Carl Leiss von der Philosophischen Fakultät der Universität Marburg die Ehrendoktorwürde verliehen. Die Belegschaft des kleinen Unternehmens zählt in den 1930ern zehn Mitarbeiter, welche vor allem Goniometer, Spektralapparate und Monochromatoren bauen, Mikroskope werden nur wenige gefertigt. November 1860 in Elberfeld; gest. 17. Dezember 1930 in Bad Wörishofen) war ein deutscher Mineraloge und Chemiker. Wülfing wurde 1884 in Heidelberg zum Dr. phil. promoviert. Die Habilitation erfolgte 1891 in Tübingen. Er war ab 1897 außerordentlicher Professor in Tübingen und ab 1899 ordentlicher Professor in Hohenheim. Ab 1904 war er etatmäßiger Professor an der TH Danzig. 1907 wurde er als Nachfolger von Reinhard Brauns ordentlicher Professor für Mineralogie und Petrographie nebst Allgemeiner Geologie in Kiel. 1908 folgte er einem Ruf nach Heidelberg, wo er bis 1926 Professor war. Er entwickelte und verbesserte Apparaturen für optische Messungen für exakte mineralogische Untersuchungen und war Großvater väterlicherseits des Professors Peter Wülfing von Martitz. Ehrungen: 1925 wurde er zum Mitglied der Deutschen Akademie der Naturforscher Leopoldina gewählt. Seit 1909 war er Mitglied der Heidelberger Akademie der Wissenschaften. Das Mineral Wülfingit ist nach ihm benannt. Signatur des Verfassers.
