Dezember 1766 geboren und fand über einige Umwege seine Berufung zur Ausbildung von Taubstummen wenige Jahre vor der Gründung einer eigenen Lehranstalt. Zuvor besuchte er die Universität in Wittenberg und studierte dort von 1782 bis 1785 Jura, Philosophie und Philologie. Besonders das Studium der Philosophie bei Elias Kaspar Reichard - hier vor allem die Bereiche Logik, empirische Psychologie und Ästhetik - legte den Grundstein für eigene vertiefende Studien . . . 1785 verließ Eschke Wittenberg und zog nach Leipzig, wo er an der Universität Jura, aber auch Geschichte, Geographie und Anthropologie hörte. In diesem Jahr begann Eschke auch mit der Arbeit an einer Pädagogik zur Ausbildung von Taubstummen. Im Rahmen seiner Arbeit hieran entstanden zahlreiche Studien auf dem Gebiet der Psychologie, weshalb er in einen Briefwechsel mit Karl Philipp Moritz und Karl Friedrich Pockels trat . . . Noch in Leipzig lernte er 1787 den ebenfalls auf dem Gebiet der Taubstummenbildung tätigen Samuel Heinike kennen, der ihn mit seiner Methode vertraut macht. Zu dieser Zeit hatte er bereits den Entschluß gefaßt, eine eigene Taubstummen-Anstalt zu gründen . . . Nach seiner Rückkehr tritt er in Verhandlungen mit dem preußischen Minister Karl Abraham Freiherr von Zedlitz, um ihn mit seiner Absicht vertraut zu machen. Im Jahre 1788 schließlich verlegt Eschke, mitlerweilen verheiratet mit der Tochter seines Lehrers Samuel Heinike, seinen Wohnsitz nach Berlin. "An die Frau Regiments-Chirurgus Eves geborene Marpurg." - Original-Manuskript in sauberer Kurrentschrift einer unveröffentlichten Rätsel-Sammlung des Berliner Pädagogen, Gehörlosenlehrers und Juristen Ernst Adolf Eschke (1766-1811). - Eschke veröffentlichte bereits 1798 eine Märchen-Sammlung "Kindermährchen" (Wegehaupt III, 867) und eine erweiterte Ausgabe mit dem Titel "Kindermährchen und Charaden" als "3. geänderte Auflage" 1805 (Seebaß I, 579 und Wegehaupt IV, 541). Außerdem besitzt die Berliner Staatsbibliothek eine 4. Auflage seines "ABCbuch für Taubstumme" (EA 1801) und "Lesebuch für Taubstumme" (Berlin, Taubstummeninstitut 1798). - "Verschiedene Faktoren erregten sein Interesse für Gehörlose: 1786 eine Begegnung mit Gehörlosen in Wien, die Bekanntschaft mit Samuel Heinicke und der Kontakt zu Abbé de l'Epée. Er besuchte Heinicke schließlich seinem Taubstummeninstituts in Leipzig und heiratete 1787 Heinickes Tochter Juliane Caroline Tugendreich. 1788 zog er auf Anraten seines Schwiegervaters nach Berlin, um dort als privater Gehörlosenlehrer zu arbeiten. Am 2. Dezember 1788 unterrichtete er das erste Mal gehörlose Schüler- und Schülerinnen in Berlin. Zunächst unterrichtete er nach der oralen Methode seines Schwiegervaters. Nach dem Studium der Bücher von I'Epèe und Abbe Sicard wandte er sich allerdings von dieser Methode ab. Er hatte nun die Gebärdensprache als Muttersprache der Gehörlosen erkannt und verwendete sie ganz selbstverständlich im Unterricht. Um 1793 veröffentlichte er seine kombinierte Methode. Hier standen die Gebärdensprache, die Schriftsprache und die Lautsprache im Vordergrund ausgerichtet auf die individuellen Begabungen des einzelnen Schülers. Diese Methode bildet die Grundlage für die heutige bimodal-bilinguale Methode. Unterstützer dieser Methode fand er mit Karl Teuscher (Lehrer in Leipzig), Carl Habermaß (17831826, gehörloser Lehrer in Berlin) und Carl Heinrich Wilke (18001876, gehörloser Lehrer und Künstler in Berlin). Im Jahr 1798 kaufte der König von Preußen, Friedrich Wilhelm III., ein Haus in der Linienstraße 110. Eschkes Privatinstitut wurde daraufhin in den Stand eines "Königlich-preußische Instituts für Stumme" (Königliche Taubstummenanstalt) erhoben. Er wurde der Schuldirektor. Ab 1808 war er Königlich Preußischer Oberschulrat in Berlin.
