Paperback. Condition: Good. Retour en Afghanistan (1987) by Emma Sergeant is the exact opposite of a ?Top 10 Things To Do? travel book. It?s more like: Top 10 Things That Will Stay In Your Head For Years , plus a lingering sense that the word ?return? can mean a lot more than simply going back to a place. Because that?s the hook… here: retour . Not ?discovering? Afghanistan as a fresh-faced visitor, but coming back ? with memory in one hand and reality in the other, and no guarantee they?ll match. A return implies before-and-after, familiarity and shock, recognition and disorientation. It implies you thought you knew the place? and then the place reminds you that it does not exist for your comfort, your narrative, or your tidy conclusions. Published in 1987 , this book sits right in that late-20th-century zone where the world feels both closer (air travel, reportage, magazines) and impossibly far away (politics, borders, conflict, the sheer scale of what outsiders don?t understand). It carries the texture of its era: a time when documentation was physical, when images and words had to do more work because you couldn?t just open twenty browser tabs and ?context? your way out of feeling something. And the French title matters, too. Retour en Afghanistan has a certain cool restraint to it ? not sensational, not breathless. Just a statement. We went back. Here is what we found. Which is often the most unsettling tone of all. This is the kind of book you pick up expecting ?foreign places? and end up thinking about people , distance , what gets remembered , and what a ?return? costs ? emotionally, morally, practically. It?s a book that doesn?t need an ISBN to feel official; it feels official because it feels real . (And because, let?s be honest, the lack of an ISBN gives it that faintly mysterious, small-run, ?found object? vibe: like something you weren?t supposed to stumble across in the wild, which makes it instantly more tempting.) Condition: Good ? meaning it?s been handled, read, lived with. Not pristine, not precious, but intact and ready to be opened again. Exactly the right state for a book like this: a little weathered, still present, still carrying its weight. Sold by Crappy Old Books , naturally ? because where else would a serious, slightly elusive 1987 return to Afghanistan end up, if not in the hands of someone who likes their shelves stocked with curiosity, history, and the occasional book that quietly clears its throat and changes the mood of the room.
