The country's origin as a confederation of seven independent republics, has had effect in the sense that government usually works 'bottom up'. As a result the Netherlands has relatively few national cultural institutions when compared to other countries. Moreover, the national media never have been linked to the nation state. It is therefore surprising that the nation's cultural policy can be described as a national system in which the nation state sets the agenda rather than cities and regions. The volume presents scholarly reflection on current issues in Dutch cultural policy using data from topical academic research. The book presents basic data (and contexualization of this data) on Dutch cultural policy to an international audience. Nieuwstaat. - Studie waarin het achttiende-eeuwse uitgevers- en boekhandelsbedrijf in de Republiek wordt reconstrueerd aan de hand van Henri Du Sauzet (1687-1754). Du Sauzet, protestant en afkomstig uit Toulouse, gaf vanaf 1714 franstalige boeken uit in de Republiek, eerst in Den Haag en later in Amsterdam. Van Meerkerk gebruikt hem bewust als een voorbeeld : niet omdat Du Sauzet een uitzonderlijk succesvol ondernemer was, maar juist omdat zijn bedrijfspraktijk inzicht geeft in bredere structuren van de internationale boekhandel van die tijd. Een van de belangrijkste bronnen is Du Sauzets omvangrijke correspondentie. Daaruit reconstrueert Van Meerkerk de dagelijkse praktijk van een achttiende-eeuwse uitgever: het verwerven en redigeren van kopij, contacten met auteurs en vertalers, druktechnische keuzes, distributie, financiering, voorraadbeheer, ruilhandel, krediet, concurrentie en zakelijke risico's. Ook de fondslijst en de inventaris van zijn nalatenschap maken het boek tot een belangrijk naslagwerk. Opvallend is dat diens uitgeefbeleid niet uitsluitend door winstverwachting werd bepaald. Belangrijk zijn zijn activiteiten als uitgever van Franstalige geleerdenperiodieken, waaronder Nouvelles littéraires (1715-1720), Mémoires de littérature (1715-1717) en later de Bibliothèque françoise (1730-1746).
