I would have graded this set 'As New' but on pages 201, 203 and 206 of Volume 2, a child or ? Has made a large biro squiggle/drawing? Across those pages. Maybe an adult disagreeing with the content ther…e - but I think 'little hands' got hold of the book briefly before it was whisked away! ! Otherwise NO inscriptions or other marks that I can see, and the set seems very little, if ever, used. Volume 1 is a large paperback (vi) + 698 pages. Volume 2 is a large paperback (vi) + 658 pages; and Volume 3 is a Hardback containing only (vi) + 30 pages plus two large fold-out maps housed in special 'pockets' at the end. All in pristine condition, apart from the biro markings mentioned earlier. "The Ecological Survey of Zambia is a detailed account of the travels of Colin Trapnell during 1932-43 in what used to be Northern Rhodesia. Illustra…ted by 5 black and white plates (one folding facsimile), including portrait frontispiece, by genealogical tables, and by diagram in text. Decorated by publisher's device on title page. One of several editions of this famous courtship correspondence, in this case preserving the original spelling and punctuation. The main sequence contains 77 letters written 1652-54, preserved in the British Library (Add MS 33975), written by Dorothy Osborne (1627-95) who was prevented form marrying Sir William Temple (1628-99) for seven years. Temple, 1st baronet, with an Anglo-Irish background, was a diplomat serving Charles II, who took part in diplomatic missions involving the Dutch, including the marriage of Princess Mary to the Prince of Orange in 1677. In later years he employed the young Jonathan Swift as his secretary. The letters have been edited by George Charles Moore Smith (1858-1940,) literary scholar who was professor of English at the University of Sheffield and its predecessors, 1896-1924. A fine set, bindings square and firm, the contents clean and bright throughout. There is a tiny patch of loss to the gilt lettering (the lower half of the editor's name) to the…spine of Vol. I (down to manufacture rather than rubbing). A lovely, sharp example of this important set. As Patrick Parrinder, the consulting editor, writes in the Preface to these four packed volumes, "To his output of 150 books and pamphlets and over 4200 published items we may now add some 2,800 selected letters. The statistics alone are impressive enough, but the letters offer a unique record of the intellectual vitality, the sense of mission, the candour and the personal warmth that Wells sustained throughout his long life." A monumental editorial feat, drawing on more than fifty archives and libraries (including the papers of Wells's daughter), the correspondence is as much a portrait of the age as the author. Wells corresponded with President Roosevelt, Prime Ministers Churchill and Balfour; with friends and lovers including Rebecca West, Eileen Power, Gertrude Stein, Marie Stopes, and Dorothy Richardson; not to speak of correspondence with the press and the BBC. In addition to his own letters there is a selection of letters addressed to Wells (where his own are not extant) including those from Joseph Conrad, Jung, Trotsky, and J.C. Smuts. "David Smith demonstrated his scholarship in his political biography of Wells ('Desperately Mortal', 1986) and deserves the highest praise for the expertise and patience he has brought to this later enterprise not least in deciphering Wells's tiny handwriting. Bullen, (Arthur Henry, 1857-1920) was a British editor, publisher, and founder of the Shakespeare Head Press, which for its first decades was a publisher of fine editions in the tradition of the Kelmscott Press. Harold Child, (1869-1945) was a literary critic and writer who was prominent in the development of dramatic criticism, notably in his work on the history of Shakespearean production. A great British literary Association Copy. In quarter cloth over paper covered boards, Very Good, corners rubbed, label darkened yet legible, front hinge cracked and holding nicely, many pages with scholarly marginal notations in pencil and 3 sheets of motes in pencil laid in, most likely in Harold Child's hand.
