Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Brian Rees (Wrapper design) (illustrator). First Edition. Twelfth impression of the true first edition, published in 1961. Preface and musical settings by Daniel Jones. This printing carries the redesigned dustwrapper with the striking illustration by Brian Rees. ***Very good in light brown cloth-covered boards with metallic copper titles to the spine. The titles are still quite bright. Extremities and head and tail of spine very slightly rubbed and creased. Edges of page block are foxed. Internally also very good, with a neat contemporary ownership inscription to the top of the front free endpaper. There is some foxing to the first and last few pages, but the main body of the book is clean. No creases or tears. Spine tight. ***In a very good illustrated price-clipped dustwrapper. Although largely complete, the edges of the dustwrapper are rubbed and creased, with some small areas of loss at the head and tail of the spine. No chips or tears, and no significant creasing. No fading. Dustwrapper bright. ***190mm x 125mm. 101 pages. ***'"Under Milk Wood" is probably the most enchanting work for broadcasting ever written. Radio was a medium which Dylan Thomas had studied, and "Under Milk Wood" is radio extended towards its highest possibilities. The play was ten years in gestation, and even then the final pages were unrevised. "Under Milk Wood" has been called poetry. The narrative is vigorous and rich, the dialogue sparkles, the songs are beautifully simple, the play overflows with the author's fecund vision of human experience compressed into, or pressed out of, the small Welsh seaside town of Llaregyb. But we like to think of it in Dylan Thomas's own description as "prose with blood-pressure."' (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper) ***A later twelfth impression of the true first edition of "Under Milk Wood". The book was reprinted many times, but most of the preceding printings carried the original plain green dustwrapper. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.

Book
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Jacket by Brian Rees (illustrator). Reprint. First published in 1954, this is a twelfth impression of 1961. Some edge wear and chipping to top and bottom of Rees' fabulous retro jacket and spine, corners very slightly rubbed, not price clipped (10s 6d), previous owner's bookplate and inscription to ffep, very slight lean, internally clean and tight, overall a vg++ copy, in bright unsunned jacket reminiscent in style to John Craxton and John Minton, by Welsh artist Brian Rees (b.1930).101pp. Commissioned by the BBC, and described by Welsh poet Dylan Thomas (1914-53), as 'a play for voices' UNDER MILK WOOD takes the form of an emotive and hilarious account of a spring day in the fictional Welsh seaside village of Llareggub. We learn of the inhabitants' dreams and desires, their loves and regrets. The play introduces us to characters such as Captain Cat who dreams of his drowned former seafellows and Nogood Boyo who dreams of nothing at all. It is a unique and touching depiction of a village that has 'fallen head over bells in love'. The First Voice narration reveals the ordinary world of daily happenings and events, while the Second Voice conveys the intimate, innermost thoughts of the fascinating folk of Llareggub. There have been many productions of UNDER MILK WOOD over the years and Richard Burton, Peter O'Toole, Elizabeth Taylor, Sir Anthony Hopkins and Tom Jones have all starred in radio, stage or film adaptations. Scarce with jacket.
