Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book explores and categorizes the structures of the Organs of Hearing, focusing on the Ears of humans. It begins with an overview of the anatomy of the external ear, including its folds and cartilages, muscles and vessels, with additional attention to the differences between an adult ear and that of a child. It then proceeds to describe the bony passage of the ear, the auditory passage, and the membrana tympani that separates the external ear from the middle ear. Particular attention is given to the malleus, incus, and stapes, which are three small bones that play a crucial role in hearing. The author describes how the malleus is connected to the membrana tympani, the incus to the malleus, and the stapes to the incus. Each of these connections and their importance to hearing is meticulously detailed, and the author also provides information on the various muscles and nerves that are part of the auditory system. Concluding the book is a discussion of sound waves, with particular attention given to their role in how we perceive sound. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Couverture rigide. First Edition
Couverture rigide. Condition: Bon. Dezeimeris II/p.168 - Garrison-Morton n°1545 (édit. orig.) - Blake p.130 - Hirsch II.249 - Grolier medicine 36. -.

Senac ensured that they were published and they appeared as Oeuvres anatomiques (Paris, 1761) and the present work. In addition to the "Eloge de M. Du Verney" in Volume I, the work contains Du Verney's writings on the diagnosis and treatment of fractures, dislocations, and bone diseases. He gave excellent descriptions of the pathology of rickets and an early description of osteoporosis. His account of the isolated fracture of the wing of the ilium, Du Verney's fracture, is also found in this work." See also Heirs 664: "Du Verney received his medical degree from Avignon in 1667 and came immediately to Paris where he was to find his greatest opportunities in investigation and teaching. He soon became a successful anatomical lecturer and demonstrator and in 1679 was appointed professor of anatomy and surgery at the Jardin du Roi. He was very active in anatomical research and was an excellent teacher, attracting large numbers of students to his lectures and demonstrations." First English ediiton of the first thoroughly scientific study of the structure, function and diseases of the ear. Duverney was the first to depict the arteries, veins and nerve branches of the auricle, the first to demonstrate that the bony part of the external auditory meatus originates from the annulus tympanicum, and the first to describe and illustrate the communication between the tympanic cavity and the cells of the mastoid process. He corrected a long-standing error by stating that the Eustachian tube was not an organ of breathing or hearing but simply the channel through which the air of the tympanum was renewed. His excellent account of the bony labyrinth included the first accurate description of the five vestibular openings of the semicircular canals, and a new description of the auditory nerve. Duverney believed the organs of sound perception to be the cochlea, semicircular canals and spiral lamina, and was the first to suggest the resonance theory of hearing that was later developed by Helmholtz. He also pointed out that persons afflicted with certain types of deafness can hear sound through bone conduction and gave what is believed to be the first description of a cholesteatoma (mastoid / middle ear tumor).
