Die Herausgeber irren allerdings mit ihrer Angabe "Faksimile der Ausgabe aus dem Jahr 1668" - dazu haben sie sich wohl durch die Jahreszahl 1668 auf dem letzten Kupfer der Vorlage verleiten lassen. Bei der Vorlage handelt es in Wirklichkeit um die Ausgabe, Paris, Charles-Antoine Jombert, (ca. 1765) - der Satz "Cet abrege d'Osteologie est extrait du Traite des Os, par M. du Verney, lequel fait partie des Oeuvres anatomiques de cet homme celebre, imprimees chez Jombert, en 1761, en deux volumes in-quarto, avec beaucoup de figures" am Schluß der Einleitung von Teil 2, führt die Datierung der Vorlage auf das Jahr 1668 ad absurdum. Exemplar Nr. 805 der Auflage von 999 Exemplaren - Druck auf Hadernbütten.

Les eaux-fortes copient certaines des illustrations du De homani corporis fabrica de Vesale et de son Epitome : ces tailles-douces seraient, de l'avis général, les plus belles reproductions des illustrations de Vésale jamais réalisées ("the most beautiful reproduction of Vesalius' illustrations ever to be made". Cushing, A bio-Bliography of Andreas Vesales). L'ouvrage, paru pour la première fois en 1668, est sans doute dû à la collaboration entre Roger de Piles (1635-1709) et le graveur François Tortebat (1621-1690). Certains l'attribuent Roger de Piles seul, sur la foi d'une note apparaissant dans son Cours de peinture par principes (Paris, 1708, p. 153 : "j'ai écrit autrefois sous un nom emprunté [* Abrégé d'anatomie par Tortebat] un abrégé d'anatomie accommodé aux arts de peinture et de sculpture."). La présente édition, imprimée en 1800 par Barrois et Magimel, utilise 10 (sur 12) des cuivres originaux, restés dans le fonds de Charles-Antoine Jombert, imprimeur et libraire du Roi. Celui-ci céda son commerce en 1775, et une partie de ses collections en 1776. En 1765, il avait fait paraitre une édition de l'Abrégé d'anatomie "mis dans un ordre nouveau", c'est-à-dire divisé en deux parties, distinguant la myologie de l'Ostéologie, en mettant à profit, pour la description des "os du corps humain", le récent Traité des Os de Du Verney (Jombert, 1761) : notre édition est faite sur celle-ci. La feuille de remploi utilisée en guise de chemise est illustrée d'un dessin dans le style néoclassique, représentant une jeune femme de profil. En l'état. Une auréole sombre, rousseurs.
