But for quite a few African countries no such list exists, in which case I have attempted to draw up a list from a scattering of literature references and museum collections. I have accepted as a national checklist only annotated publications (in which occurrence and status are justified), and have avoided using simple lists of names, field guides and other works lacking bibliographic detail. For each country likely to have unpublished species additions or status changes I have then submitted my own list for comment to someone with personal knowledge of the national avifauna.
