L'un des moyens, mais ce n'est pas le seul, est l'utilisation de plantes génétiquement modifiées par l'insertion d'un ou plusieurs gènes qui confèrent à ces dernières un trait particulier présentant une très haute valeur ajoutée pour l'agriculture et l'environnement. Cette recherche de nouvelles méthodes a abouti au cours des années 1980 à l'élaboration des techniques de transgenèse végétale et, plus récemment, à la culture de variétés transgéniques. Si les outils de la transgenèse permettent déjà d'optimiser les pratiques culturales, ils permettent également de produire des protéines d'intérêt thérapeutique (anticorps, vaccins, produits dérivés du sang, etc.) ou industriel (matières plastiques biodégradables, biocarburants, etc.). Ces outils ont également permis de faire progresser de façon spectaculaire nos connaissances sur le fonctionnement et le développement des végétaux. Il reste que l'utilisation des OGM soulève des questions d'ordre scientifique - effets liés à la position du transgène dans le génome, transfert du transgène d'une plante à l'autre, effets toxiques ou allergiques liés à l'apparition d'une protéine nouvelle, impact sur la biodiversité, etc., mais également d'ordre sociologique, expression emblématique d'une certaine façon de pratiquer l'agriculture, mise en concurrence sauvage d'agricultures totalement différentes, contrôle de l'agriculture mondiale par les grands groupes multinationaux de l'agroalimentaire. La non-maîtrise des réponses à ces questions conduit à une forme de violence se traduisant par un refus des technologies modernes.
