Sie waren über und über behaart, hatten Barte und spitze Ohren und lebten in Rudeln auf Bäumen. Wohl zunächst durch ihre Lebensweise veranlaßt, die beim Klettern den Händen andre Geschäfte zuweist als den Füßen, fingen diese Affen an, auf ebner Erde sich der Beihülfe der Hände beim Gehen zu entwöhnen und einen mehr und mehr aufrechten Gang anzunehmen. Damit war der entscheidende Schritt getan für den Übergang vom Affen zum Menschen." So leitete Friedrich Engels 1876 seine Arbeit Anteil der Arbeit an der Menschwerdung des Affen" ein. Diese Schrift gehört zu den großen Leistungen der Wissenschaft. Obwohl es sich um einen schwierigen wissenschaftlichen Stoff handelt, ist sie klar und verständlich geschrieben. Zwar ist die Arbeit in manchen Einzelheiten durch die spätere Forschung korrigiert worden, aber das ist in der schnell fortschreitenden Wissenschaft normal. Ungewöhnlich ist dagegen, daß ein vor fast hundert Jahren verfaßter Aufsatz noch heute in allen wichtigen Ergebnissen richtig ist und durch alle nachfolgenden Forschungen eindeutig bestätigt wird. Dem Abdruck der Engelsschen Schrift in diesem Buch folgt deshalb eine interessante, anschauliche, von den Wissenschaftlern Peter Donat und Herbert Ullrich geschriebene Darstellung der frühen Menschheitsentwicklung und die spannende Forschungsgeschichte der letzten hundert Jahre mit ihren zahlreichen Funden durch Forscher in vielen Ländern." ; Inhalt: Warum beschäftigen wir uns mit der Entstehung des Menschen?
