Condition: New. SB.133pp.Published Price £8.50 It may not be widely known but a large number of Irish soldiers deserted their own army during WWII (Eire remained neutral) and crossed the sea to join the British army. Once the war was over these men were officially dismissed the service and their names published in this confiden…tial document. The formal title of the document is âList of personnel of the Defence Forces dismissed for desertion in time of National Emergency pursuant to the terms of Emergency Powers (No 362) Order 1945 (S.R. & O. 1945 No 198) or Section 13 of the Defence Forces (Temporary Provisions) Act, 1946 (No 7/1946).â In it are listed, in alphabetical order, some 5,000 or more names with Army No, last recorded address, date of birth, declared occupation prior to enlistment in Defence Forces, and date of dismissal from Defence Forces. In the latter case the date is amost invariably 8 August 1945. This document was circulated to all civil service departments and state run services, e.g post office, health service, state owned bus , rail, air and shipping companies etc. This was obviously intended to bar them from any form of government employment. It is a fascinating document and one which I have never been aware of before. It would be interesting, with the Naval and Military Press CD of Soldiers Died in WWII, to see how many of them were kiled or died in the war. The number of desertions is surprisingly large for a small army, but it must be an indication of the strength of feeling at the time.

This is a replica of the actual trench orders that would be issued to troops when occupying allied trenches. m It is most surprising that an original survived trench life and a 100 years to be able to be replicated. The dirty mark on the front cover looks to have been on the original…and thus reproduced. It only has 12 pages, but is an interesting read for a student of the Great War. All my books are scanned or photorgaphed so you can see what you are buying.

Contact seller5-star sellerNo Binding. Condition: Good. No Jacket. Wanted Poster 303 x 213 mm. In acid free Mylar sleeve. Will be shipped flat between heavy cardboard layers, never rolled. Flier issued by the William J. Burns International Detective Agency for J. D. Austin, a prolific check forger with a long history of arrests. His ultimate fate after th…is 1922 bulletin is obscure. "J. D. Austin" was an alias. He is identified in various police records as John D. Austin or J. D. Altman. Operating across the U.S.as a bogus magazine subscription agent and traveling salesman, he used charm and false credentials to pass worthless checks to merchants and hotel managers. Prior to this notice, he had been apprehended in different states under similar fraud charges, often skipping bail or serving short sentences before moving to a new region. Because he operated across state lines before modern unified tracking databases, career "paper hangers" (check forgers) like Austin frequently shifted identities. The handwritten "2169" is a ledger number. Minor staining. His description includes: "Appearance - Jewish" Transcription: RAYMOND J. BURNS, PRES. W. SHERMAN BURNS, SEC. & TREAS. THE WILLIAM J. SPECIAL SERVICE: BURNS HOTEL PROTECTION DEPARTMENT, UNIFORMED PROTECTIVE PATROL SERVICE ________________________________________ $50.00 REWARD [Two Mugshot Photographs: Profile and Frontal View of J. [Handwritten ink override over "Weight": 2169] Hair: Black Nativity: Russian Appearance: Jewish Eyes: Brown - Nose Glasses Complexion: Dark Occupation: Commercial Traveler DESCRIPTION OF WIFE: Name: Lucile Austin Age: 25 Years Height: 5 ft. 3 in. Build: Slender Hair: Blonde We have been authorized by our Client to offer a reward of $50.00 for the apprehension of J. D. Austin whose photograph and description appears above. It is alleged J. D. Austin has been traveling about the country representing himself to be an agent for the American Circulation Company, 6037 Hollywood Boulevard, Los Angeles, Calif. He is believed to be the same party who operated in the East, representing himself to be an agent for the Standard American Circulation Company, Reliable Magazine Circulation Company, American Circulation Company, Great Western Circulation Company, etc. His mode of operation is to take subscriptions for a bona fide magazine company and in payment of same secure subscribers notes which he discounts with merchants or banks. These subscriptions are never turned in to the magazine company which leaves the merchants or banks holding worthless notes against the subscribers. When last seen, J. D. Austin was traveling in a Hudson coupe, engine No. 72330, California license No. 281-709, and was accompanied by his wife and eight year old daughter. Chief of Police D. J. O'Brien, San Francisco, California, holds felony warrant for worthless check and will send officer with proper papers for Austin's return.
