Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Good. This is a very carefully curated publication with 37 of Dürer's iconic woodcuts - displayed within a visually very appealing book with gilt titles along the spine, light umber cloth boards, top edge gilt and uncut pages. Top edge gilt. According to the Introduction, the publishers have attempted to re…peat as nearly as possible the second edition of 1511 of Dürer's Passion; with the blocks used being those employed by Sir Henry Cole (Director of South Kensington Museum/now the Victoria and Albert Museum) in his issues of 1844 and 1870. In addition, this book was printed by the Chiswick Press which possessed 'a fount of type which closely approximates to that used in Nuremberg press, being probably, in common with that, derived from a Venetian model…' Condition (external): cloth boards have a little bending/minor fraying at the edges. Likewise, some slight fraying at the head of the spine. Condition (internal): mild to moderate tanning throughout; with occasional foxing. This is more apparent on the book's preliminary and final pages. See, for example, the image of the frontispiece's tissue guard. A couple pages (cf image of The Nativity V page) have some fraying and small sections at the margins missing. The FFEP has an ink inscription dated Xmas 1896 (image). pp. 13 (intro). The rest is unpaginated. 12mo (large). The front pastedown has a tipped in label: Tabley House Library. In case of interest we have included a post card relating to the book's provenance before email etc was widely adopted by commerce. Add to basketLeather. Condition: Very Good. A scarce facsimile reprint of the first edition of Robinson Crusoe, originally published in 1719. A facsimile reprint of the first edition of Robinson Crusoe published in 1719, with an introduction from English poet and essayist Austin Dobson. A contender for the first English novel, Daniel Defoe's… epistolary, confessional and sometimes didactic work tells the story of Robinson Crusoe, a castaway who spends twenty eight years on a remote tropical island. The novel is often credited as marking the beginning of realistic fiction as a literary genre, and has been subject to countless readings due to its rich societal, religious, and cultural analysis. This facsimile reprint of the first edition of this famous and highly imitated work shows how the original publication credits Robinson Crusoe as its author, which led many contemporary readers to believe that the novel was actually a travelogue of true incidents. Two pages of adverts from the original 1719 facsimile to the rear. In a full brown calf binding. Externally, very smart, with some light wear to the spine and the extremities. Internally, generally firmly bound, although the opening few pages are a little tender. Pages are bright with light scattered foxing throughout. Very Good. None (illustrator). book.
