Red cloth. Ltd. to 550 copies this #101. xi,324,xii Pp. 8 plates (2 folding) & 3 folding maps Translated by Mrs. Clarence Webster; edited with notes and introduction by John Clarence Webster. Publication of the Champlain Society XX. Sieur de Diereville was the supercargo or agent appointed by the ship owner and responsible for t…he cargo on the vessel "Royalle Paix", that sailed for Acadia on Aug. 20th, 1699 and that reached Port-Royal on Oct. 13th. He spent a year in Nova Scotia gathering plants and information about the region and its' Acadian and MicMac population, returning to Europe on November 9th, 1700. In his book he describes in detail the life aboard ship before reaching Port Royal and once in Acadia his interest in the fauna. He recounts his fishing and hunting trips, the Canadian winter, the methods of making spruce beer and maple sugar. He also describes the life of the Acadians, their dikes and the customs of the MicMac with a special emphasis on the cooking and food of both people. This journal was first published in 1708 and sold very well, due to the increasing interest in the new world. In very good condition with previous ownwer's name on the first blank page.

Couverture rigide. | [ENGLISH DESCRIPTION FOLLOWS] Rare first edition of this curious travel account, originally written entirely in verse (7,500 lines), though the authoron the advice of friendsagreed to intersperse it with prose narrative (retaining 2,500 lines of verse); see Sabin 20128, Gagnon 1134 (1710 edition), and Dionne II.Contemporary full brown calf binding, spine with five raised bands, gilt compartments decorated with gilt floral tools, cherry red morocco label, gilt roll tooling at head and foot, double black fillet border on covers, gilt fillets on board edges, sprinkled yellow edges with red mottling.Lower right corner of upper cover restored; some spots and minor scuffs to the boards; occasional light foxing, otherwise internally fresh and appealing.Unlike the second edition of 1710, this copy was not issued with a frontispiece. Almost nothing is known about the life of Dières de Dièreville, a surgeon, possibly born around 1670, who embarked in August 1699 aboard the *Royale Paix* from La Rochelle for a trading mission to Acadia. He arrived on 13 October and remained in the region for a year, studying both the Acadians and the Indigenous peoples, while also collecting plant specimens for the Jardin du Roi in Paris. His return voyage took place from 6 October to 9 November 1700, after which he settled as a surgeon in Pont-l'Évêque. At the request of Michel Bégon, Intendant of La Rochelle, he wrote the account of his travels. He was still alive in 1711, but nothing further is known of his life. * in-12 ; [7] ff. n. ch. (faux-titre & titre, dédicace à l'intendant Begon, permission), 236 pp., un f.n.ch. d'approbation, 7 pp.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. 12mo. pp. 7 p.l., 236, [1 leaf], 7. complete with half-title. woodcut ornaments & initials. contemporary sprinkled calf, gilt back (head of spine chipped, small stain to upper covers, some light browning but a good copy). First Edition, Third Issue. Dièreville, a French surgeon, was appoi…nted supercargo on board a vessel bound for Port Royal in October of 1699. The present work, written in a curious mixture of prose and verse, recounts his journey and year-long stay in Acadia, descriptions of local flora and fauna, the state of the beaver trade, and impressions of Indian life and manners. One of the most curious practices related is the Indian method of reviving drowned people by enemas of tobacco smoke. Many floral specimens were gathered and brought back to France by Dièreville, including a honeysuckle which was named, in his honour, 'Dièreville acadensis' by French botanist Joseph Pitton de Tournefort in 1706. The Relation also contains considerable interesting detail regarding Indian and Acadian culinary practices, and is considered to be the "first important work in the gastronomical literature of Canada." (DCB) Three separate issues of the first edition were published in 1708; to this third has been added an additional seven-page account of the attack of the Bastonnais on Port Royal in August of 1707.
