Soft cover. Condition: New. This bilingual collection of reminiscence of the late G.K. Das, former Head of the Department of English at the universities of Delhi and Kashmir and Vice-Chancellor, Utkal University, derives from several sources. These include his family, fellow academics, and former students and friends, many of wh…om have distinguished themselves in various professions including business, civil service and diplomacy. As the reminiscences, both in English and Odia, recall the early days of Professor Das in a small town in Odisha, and his days in Cambridge, Delhi, Srinagar and Bhubaneswar, he is seen as resolutely holding on to a range of competing affiliations: local, national, and international.

Hardcover. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: New. 1st Edition. Contents: Introduction. 1. Romancing the Republic: Shankar, Nehru and the Man of the Week. 2. Uncommon Citizens: Laxman and the Common Man. 3. Abu and the Keeping of the National Conscience. 4. Reconfiguring the Nation: The Thoughts of O. V. Vijayan. 5. Critiqui…ng the Contemporary: Suraiya and Ninan. Conclusion. References. Index. This book explores the career of graphic satire , i.e., newspaper cartoons, in independent India (post-1947). It offers detailed analyses of the work of prominent practitioners of the genre, including: Shankar Pillai, R. K. Laxman, Abu Abraham, O. V. Vijayan and the collaborative team of Jug Suraiya and Ajit Ninan. Chapter 1 reflects on Shankar s endearing yet thoughtful portrayals of Nehru in his Man of the Week series, which addresses the challenges confronting the early years of the republic. In Chapter 2, the author deals with Laxman s character the Common Man , a usually silent witness who testifies to the complexities of the post-Nehruvian era. Chapter 3 deals with Abu Abraham s Emergency-era series Private View , which sought to keep the national conscience alive through this difficult period. Chapter 4 explores O. V. Vijayan s dark and bitterly ironic graphic world, which deals with the inequities of development and the failures of justice in 1980s India. Chapter 5 takes up the collaborative work of Jug Suraiya and Ajit Ninan, who address the issues and concerns of a more self-confident, post-liberalisation nation, including environmentalism, multinational capital and international warfare. Christel Devadawson interprets the genre of graphic dissent as a form of national lifewriting -the autobiographical recording of self, memory and experience-that brings to light the trials and travails of democracy in the young nation-state.

Hardcover. Condition: New. This book in memory of Prof. G. K. Das takes on special significance as India reflects on the ever-changing prospect ahead of the first seventy-five years of her independence. It should be of interest to the general reader as well as to scholars from the fields of literature and cultural studies. The c…ollection outlines the exciting yet troubled relationship between texts and the larger cultural context that they help shape and that shapes them in turn. From India's legendary past, through the dawn of colonisation, its high noon and long-drawn out twilight, the essays urge the reader to compare in principle and in practice the sophisticated relationship between events and the written word, or between lines of inquiry and the various kinds of writing that articulate them. The framing narrative of historical and social change in the world outside India encloses this core concern. The collection closes with a previously unpublished essay by G.K. Das that brings to the forefront one of the most urgent global issues of today, the troubling relationship between humanity and an ecologically fragile environment within which it functions.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Written in the memory of Professor G.K. Das and divided into three sections, this book takes on special significance as India reflects on the ever-changing prospects ahead of the first seventy-five years of independence. The subject matter in this book outlines the relationship between texts…and the larger cultural context that they shape (and that, in turn, shapes them). It also presents a comparison of the relationship between events and the written word, or between lines of inquiry and the various kinds of writing that articulate them. The first section discusses British and Indian writers of the precolonial and colonial periods. The essays in the second section reflect on the question: Does the emergent nation-state seem at all like the visions that presaged it, or does it increasingly resemble the imperialistic nightmare that it seeks to replace? Finally, the last section explores the relationship between literature and human nature and also discusses the framing discourse on literature and the environment. The collection closes with a previously unpublished essay by Professor Das that brings to the forefront one of the most urgent global issues of today the troubling relationship between humanity and an ecologically fragile environment within which it functions.Print edition not for sale in South Asia (India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan or Bhutan) The subject matter in this book outlines the relationship between texts and the larger cultural context that they shape (and that, in turn, shapes them).
