Il décrit les opérations militaires ayant trait aux places fortes ainsi que les méthodes de construction des fortifications. Il contient 142 PLANCHES gravées en taille-douce, et non 150 comme annoncé à tort dans le titre. CARTONS aux pages 211 et 259. Il s'agit essentiellement de plans de fortifications, mais ces planches détaillent également la marche des troupes, la distribution des campements, les instruments et ustensiles de guerre, l'emplacement des batteries, la conduite des sapes et des tranchées, le passage des fossés, les assauts, la défense des places, etc. Cartons aux pages 221 et 259. L'ouvrage a été relié à l'époque SANS LE FRONTISPICE gravé par Le Roux d'après Guilard. Dédié au prince de Conti, l'ouvrage se divise en QUATRE PARTIES d'inégale grandeur. La première partie : un "Traité des fortifications" (171 pages) ; la deuxième partie : "De la Marche et conduite des troupes et armées dans différents pays; des noms & usages des instrumens servants à l'attaque, & défense des Places; des constructions & distributions des campemens pour les Sièges; de la conduite des tranchées, des sapes, des logemens dans les chemins couverts, & autres ouvrages, &c." (102 pages) ; la troisième partie: "De la Défense des places contre toutes sortes de siège, Capitulations, Réditions, &c. Distributions des Troupes pour combattre, avec la manière de les mettre en bataille rangée, &c." (17 pages) ; la quatrième partie : "De l'artillerie comprenant la fabrique et effet de la poudre, de la construction des Mines, Fourneaux & Fougades, &c." (13 pages). Pierre-Samuel DESPREZ DE SAINT-SAVIN dresse dans cet ouvrage un bilan des progrès effectués dans le domaine des fortifications et présente les systèmes hollandais d'après Errad, Marollois, Frisach, Dogens et Stevin, mais aussi les systèmes espagnols, italiens, ceux de Vauban, du Chevalier de Ville, du Comte de Pagan et du Baron de Coëhorn.
