Rampollo di un'illustre famiglia moscovita, a poco più di cinquant'anni Scukin è un consumato collezionista con un vissuto importante alle spalle. Già da un decennio, dopo aver risollevato le sorti dell'impresa tessile paterna, ha preso a frequentare Parigi dove può ammirare i pittori d'avanguardia esposti ai salon: sono i Monet, i Degas, i Cézanne, i Gauguin e i Van Gogh che vanno via via a rivestire con le loro tinte oltraggiose le pareti di palazzo Trubeckoj. In quel 1906, dunque, Sergej riconosce l'ondata di emozione che lo travolge quando sente sua un'opera fin dal primo istante.
