The Iron Age copper smelting site situated near the Cypriot village Agia Varvara is of particular importance among the ancient copper processing places in the Near East because it has revealed spatial as well as technological aspects of copper production in a hitherto rarely-seen depth of detail. Agia…Varvara-Almyras: an Iron Age Copper Smelting Site in Cyprus presents the results of a comprehensive post-excavation analysis of the stratigraphy (part I), also of the geology, metallurgical materials (furnaces, tuyeres), finds (pottery, furnace lining, stone tools), as well as a synthesis of the copper smelting technology at Agia Varvara-Almyras (part II).The excavation analysis not only focuses on pyrotechnical information from individual furnaces, but also provides a detailed study of the spatial organisation as well as of the living conditions on the smelting site. An elaborate reconstruction of the features in a 3D model allows the visualisation of formerly-dispersed loci of copper production. Based on this virtual rebuilding of the hillock named Almyras, it becomes clear that archaeometallurgy must be unchained, and the idea of an 'operational chain' must be replaced by a more multidimensional research strategy labelled as an 'operational web'. The present volume aims to stimulate future excavations which pay attention to the reasons behind the exploitation of the riches of the island, as well as to the needs of the markets where the final product was very likely to have been appreciated as a strategic commodity, by power players operating on the island as well as by ordinary people in need of a repair to an everyday commodity which had broken.

In order to better understand the nature and function of the empire's internal frontiers, and…to assess the territorial, social and economic structure of provincial organization, an international project was launched by the University of Zurich.An interdisciplinary group of European scientists gathered in Rome in 2016 in order to present and discuss first outcomes of this initiative.The question of Roman provincial borders can be addressed in various ways. A critical analysis of written sources gives insight into the significance of borders for political and tax organization. The study of landscapes and settlements by means of geographical information systems (GIS) allows to visualize topo-geographic structures, and to propose effective lines of border, as in the case of the frontier between Germania superior and Raetia. By analyzing the production and distribution of specific material culture such as pottery, coins or costume, economic structures become apparent; moreover, areas of cultural habits can be studied with regard to provincial borders. Bioarchaeology is yet another approach: besides providing information on human dietary habits, animal bones and botanical remains also contain evidence on environment, animal husbandry, crafts, trade, social structures, and religious beliefs. These spheres could all exhibit regional characteristics, and thus be questioned with regard to spaces and frontiers in Roman provinces. The named topics are exposed in a dozen contributions, written in English and German, and all are fully illustrated.

Very few archaeological remains were known from this area before the onset of the project, in particular with regard to the abundant subalpine environments. Archaeological excavations in Airolo-Madrano and surveys on various altitudinal levels of the valley, along with a full set of new sites and radiocarbon dates, as well as archaeobiological, anthracological and palynological research and GIS-based modeling, allow now to draw a realistic image of the valley's societal, environmental and economic situation in Prehistory, with scenarios of early Alpine Economy proposed for the Bronze and Iron Ages. Moreover, a detailed case study in GIS on population and settlement dynamics in a wider region, covering along with canton Ticino the bordering areas of Lombardy and Piemont in Italy, supplements and contextualizes the results gained in the Alpine Ticino valley. This supra-regional investigation is the first of its kind for the south-Alpine area.
