Giuseppe Pagano fu tra i principali protagonisti del rinnovamento in chiave moderna della cultura architettonica italiana negli anni Trenta, come architetto e urbanista ma anche come teorico e polemista nelle… pagine di Casabella che co-diresse con Edoardo Persico. Nato in Istria e cresciuto in un clima irredentistico, aderì al nascente movimento fascista, partecipando all'occupazione di Fiume guidata da d'Annunzio; la sua polemica in architettura tuttavia fu profondamente contraria al monumentalismo e alla retorica accademica imposta ben presto dal regime. Pagano si rivolgeva alle avanguardie internazionali del movimento moderno, pensava a un'architettura impegnata socialmente, rivolta ai bisogni crescenti imposti dall'industrializzazione, articolava un pensiero originale ed impegnato della città e dell'urbanistica di fronte alla sfida della modernità. La sua attività di architetto, oltre che quella teorica, riflette tutta questa tensione verso l'idea di un servizio sociale e di una battaglia per il rinnovamento morale ed estetico delle città italiane. La scelta antologica dei suoi scritti che qui presentiamo, curata e introdotta da Cesare De Seta, restituisce tutta la passione e l'impegno profusi da Pagano in quegli anni che solo le vicende della guerra e la deportazione nel campo di Mathausen dovevano interrompere. La sua eredità, intellettuale e professionale, è tuttavia di inestimabile valore ancora oggi, per chiunque voglia interpretare l'architettura come impegno sociale oltre che come sfida progettuale ed estetica.
