Lyell had set out to find manuscripts of textual interest and of known provenance, whether English or continental, and the present collection contains a very high proportion of such manuscripts, which range in date from the eleventh to the sixteenth century. Since the collection is of moderate size it has been possible to provide a catalogue on a much fuller scale than the Bodleian Summary Catalogue, with illustrations of more than half the manuscripts. Abbey are here catalogued for the first time. The majority of the manuscripts are of the fifteenth century, but they range in date from the early twelfth to the late sixteenth century. The collection is particularly strong in dated and securely localized manuscripts, and amongst the famous patrons for whom they were originally made are the Medici of Florence, the Visconti of Milan, the Aragonese Kings of Naples, King Matthias Corvinus of Hungary, and Popes Sixtus IV, Leo X and Julius II.
