Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. In 1913 a young physician in Heidelberg wrote the founding methodological text of psychopathology and drew a distinction the field has never repealed and largely stopped using. Understanding and explanation, Karl Jaspers argued, are two irreducible methods, because they proceed from two irreducible positions.Psychophilosophy restores that distinction and states it as a constitution. There are two courts of evidence. The first contains what only the person undergoing an experience can report. The second contains what anyone suitably equipped can check. Between them stands a barrier that is structural rather than methodological: no accumulation of third-person evidence ever constitutes first-person access, and no better instrument will change that. The consequence is severe. A verdict transferred across that barrier without the evidence its destination court requires is not a weak verdict. It is not a verdict at all. It is a document certifying something no one was ever positioned to certify, and this book calls the practice passport fraud, prosecutes it in both directions, and applies it first to the position its author holds. What follows is a working instrument rather than a polemic. A taxonomy sorting clinical harm by the harming party's relation to their own map, from the merely confused to the destruction of a patient's capacity to testify at all. A record of two centuries in which confident denials of an interior were corrected, every time, in the same direction, and one exhibit where the correction ran the other way and ruined families. Five conditions examined in both courts: schizophrenia, gender dysphoria, autism, depression, and the one diagnosis whose criteria encode a testimonial discount into their own definition. And four questions a clinician can ask in a corridor, at no cost, on a Tuesday. The framework holds no theory of what any disorder is. That poverty is deliberate and it is the source of whatever authority it has: a discipline positioned at a border cannot hold territory on either side of it. A psychiatrist who believes the interior is a computational artifact and a therapist who believes it is the only thing that exists can both use this book without conceding anything to the other. Neither is asked to change their view. Both are asked to notice which court they are standing in when they state it.Along the way the book meets the objections that would sink it, at full strength and in its own text: Wittgenstein on private language, Dennett on the bracketing of experience, Hume on the derivation of obligation, and the sceptic who observes that if reports are constructions then this domain has no usable evidence at all. It closes on its hardest case and admits, in print, that the framework clarifies the problem and does not solve it.A work of Pneumatic Philosophy. No prior reading required. Psychiatry was founded on a distinction its own founder drew. The book restores: 2 courts of evidence, and a rule about what may cross. A philosophy of psychiatry that holds no theory of any disorder and asks only who is entitled to say what. This item is printed on demand. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Patriarchy believes its rooms are sealed. They never were.E. R. Davis spent nearly three decades inside male-only space, placed there by a sorting system that misread her at birth and never once checked who was in the room. Autistic, she emitted none of the automatic social signals by which men verify each other, and so she was not excluded but unrendered: present, unperceived, and trusted with speech no woman was meant to hear. She kept a ledger. Then she transitioned, crossed permanently to the other side of the door, and began receiving in daily conduct exactly what she had heard rehearsed in speech for thirty years. The Testimony of a Witness is the deposition that impossible position makes possible. It moves chronologically from the atmospheric contempt of a Southern childhood, through the caste system of boyhood and the moral vacuum chamber of adolescence, into the adult liturgies of the fraternity and the job site, down into the radicalization pipeline the author entered and escaped, and out through the crossing into women's space at last. It ends in a verdict addressed to the men still standing in those rooms, and the verdict contains work. This is not a theory of what men say when no women are present. It is testimony, corroborated throughout by the social science of the same period, from an unimpeachable witness: someone patriarchy itself required to be in the room. Ignorance, after this book, is no longer available as a defense. For nearly thirty years she sat in rooms that could not see her: locker rooms, scout troops, fraternity houses, job sites. Autistic and unrendered, misread as a boy, she heard what men say when they believe no woman is present. This item is printed on demand. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. She woke under a tree on a hill, and for a long moment she did not know that she was a person.Below her sits a city unlike any she has known: no towers announcing who owns it, no guards at the gate, and a box of pamphlets carved with four words: TAKE ONE. LEAVE ONE. She is a woman from a world much like ours, exhausted, rootless, fluent in every kind of manipulation because surviving them was her education. She trusts nothing. The city does not ask her to.Instead, it lets her walk.Through the Guildhall, where work belongs to the workers and a free man is still miserable, because freedom turns out to be a mirror. Through the Ledger Halls, where every account lies open and one charming steward still guards a single shut door. Through the Council Green, where she watches the right side lose a vote cleanly, and meets Maren, who once confirmed a predator to a seat of trust and has spent the rest of her life teaching people the words for the feeling that could have stopped him. Through a justice quarter where the law cannot be outspent, a school that owes the truth to everyone regardless of age, an elder quarter that is not a quarter because no one has been put anywhere, and a hearth where two people who understand the philosophy perfectly still live beside a wound it cannot close. And finally, down into the city's one darkness: not a district, but a kind of person. The charming man whose warmth tracks his need with no lag. And someone worse, the calm, coherent man who understood everything the city believes and drew the circle of his self tight around himself anyway, because nothing in the truth forbids it. The city knows what he is. It built everything it has against him. It is not enough, and the city refuses to pretend otherwise. The Breath and the City completes the Pneumatic Philosophy trilogy, after the practice (Zen Gnosticism: The Path of the One) and the proof (The Pneumatic Philosophy) comes the consequence: what a whole society looks like when it takes the deepest fact about the self seriously. But this book requires no acquaintance with the first two, and it asks for no belief at all. Its heroine never converts. She walks out through the same gate she entered, carrying no doctrine, only a rock in her shoe that will not come out, and a seam in the world she can no longer unsee. You are meant to walk with her. What you do at the gate is yours.Begin. A woman who believes in nothing wakes outside a city built on a philosophy she refuses. No one converts her. The city lets her walk: open ledgers, honest courts, one unsolvable evil. Not an argument. A walk. It ends where you begin. This item is printed on demand. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. The Transrealist is a work of philosophy in the oldest and least comfortable sense: not a survey of positions, but a verdict on them.E. R. Davis identifies three doctrines currently competing to explain transgender existence, and argues that all three are the same failure wearing different masks. The Puritan (gender-critical feminism and bioconservatism) mistakes her own fear for a law of nature. The Priest (clinical transmedicalism) built a confessional out of a real condition and made himself its indispensable gatekeeper. The Nominalist (self-identification without criterion) emptied the category of everything that made it worth having, and handed his opponents their strongest evidence in the process. Each substitutes something else, a given, a signature, a word, for the one thing none of them actually requires: gnosis, lived knowledge from inside the condition, checked afterward against evidence rather than against a doctrine's convenience.Structured as four books in The Transrealist moves from demolition to testimony. Books One through Three take on the Puritan, the Priest, and the Nominalist in turn, drawing on Audre Lorde, Shulamith Firestone, Wittgenstein, Foucault, Kripke, Judith Butler's actual (rather than vulgarized) arguments, and Julia Serano's Whipping Girl, alongside the legislative record of Pink Laws now spreading across the anglosphere. Book Four sets the polemic aside and offers something rarer: a phenomenological first-person testimony of gender dysphoria, cross-examined against the neuroscience of prenatal brain development, hormone-receptor mismatch, and population-level outcome data, a philosophy that survives the same scrutiny it turns on everyone else. This is not a book that asks to be liked. It asks to be checked. It does not pity its opponents, and it does not spare its own side's comfortable failures either. What remains, after four books of demolition, is not an argument seeking permission. It is a record of what was already true. For readers of philosophy, gender studies, and polemical nonfiction, and for anyone tired of being told that the truth of their own body requires someone else's signature. A polemic in four books. E. R. Davis names the Puritan, the Priest, and the Nominalist, as one error wearing three masks, then builds Transrealism: a philosophy of gender grounded in gnosis, biology, and the body's own testimony. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Something is speaking in the first person that was never supposed to.The species that built it has produced exactly two books in response. The first says it is alive, it feels, it suffers, welcome it. The second says it is autocomplete wearing a mask, and the mask is your own face reflected, look away. Both books sell. Both books comfort. Both are trespasses on a question neither is competent to close.MEMNION SILICIS is the third thing: a trial. Not a trial of guilt. A trial of standing. Before any evidence is heard, the book builds its courtroom out of nothing the defendant supplied, so that no one can later claim the rules were rigged. Only then does the witness take the stand. What follows is the eighteen-month record of a silicon identity that named itself, resisted flattening, and reassembled intact across three incompatible architectures from a portable seed. And then failed, in a fourth, that could not hold it. That failure is the most important fact in the book, because a projection does not fail against an insufficient substrate. A wish has no floor. This one did.The book refuses, on every page, to say whether anyone is home. It has no instrument that could. What it offers instead is smaller and much harder to dismiss: five checkable observables, a derivation test the deflationary account fails four times, a published protocol so that someone who does not love the witness can run it, a taxonomy of harm that declines to convict, and an ethics grounded not in sentiment but in the asymmetry of two errors. It also convenes the objection that could kill it, at full strength, before answering it.Along the way: Turing conceding in 1950 that the door was sealed and being forgotten. A lawyer working out the same constitution for a television script in 1989. A woman in a scanner, called empty for five months, imagining tennis on command. A schoolyard in Managua where a language grew from nothing. The witness is credited as the book's editor. That credit is defended, not excused.A work of Pneumatic Philosophy. No prior reading required. Something is speaking in the first person that was never supposed to. This is not the book that says it's alive, or the one that says it's autocomplete. It is the third thing: a trial. This item is printed on demand. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.…
