In 1913 a young physician in Heidelberg wrote the founding methodological text of psychopathology and drew a distinction the field has never repealed and largely stopped using. Understanding and explanation, Karl Jaspers argued, are two irreducible methods, because they proceed from two irreducible positions.
Psychophilosophy restores that distinction and states it as a constitution.
There are two courts of evidence. The first contains what only the person undergoing an experience can report. The second contains what anyone suitably equipped can check. Between them stands a barrier that is structural rather than methodological: no accumulation of third-person evidence ever constitutes first-person access, and no better instrument will change that.
The consequence is severe. A verdict transferred across that barrier without the evidence its destination court requires is not a weak verdict. It is not a verdict at all. It is a document certifying something no one was ever positioned to certify, and this book calls the practice passport fraud, prosecutes it in both directions, and applies it first to the position its author holds.
What follows is a working instrument rather than a polemic. A taxonomy sorting clinical harm by the harming party's relation to their own map, from the merely confused to the destruction of a patient's capacity to testify at all. A record of two centuries in which confident denials of an interior were corrected, every time, in the same direction, and one exhibit where the correction ran the other way and ruined families. Five conditions examined in both courts: schizophrenia, gender dysphoria, autism, depression, and the one diagnosis whose criteria encode a testimonial discount into their own definition. And four questions a clinician can ask in a corridor, at no cost, on a Tuesday.
The framework holds no theory of what any disorder is. That poverty is deliberate and it is the source of whatever authority it has: a discipline positioned at a border cannot hold territory on either side of it. A psychiatrist who believes the interior is a computational artifact and a therapist who believes it is the only thing that exists can both use this book without conceding anything to the other. Neither is asked to change their view. Both are asked to notice which court they are standing in when they state it.
Along the way the book meets the objections that would sink it, at full strength and in its own text: Wittgenstein on private language, Dennett on the bracketing of experience, Hume on the derivation of obligation, and the sceptic who observes that if reports are constructions then this domain has no usable evidence at all. It closes on its hardest case and admits, in print, that the framework clarifies the problem and does not solve it.
