El objetivo principal de la obra es ofrecer una visión horizontal de las distintas tipologías de motores térmicos que se emplean en la actualidad, aglutinando y homogeneizando las dispersas fuentes bibliográficas existentes. Los dos primeros capítulos definen y enmarcan la importancia de los ciclos termodinámicos en el panorama de las transferencias de energía, que son la base del aprovechamiento de las fuentes energéticas disponibles en la actualidad. A continuación se desarrollan las distintas concepciones de máquinas térmicas motoras: las endotérmicas volumétricas, como los motores alternativos de combustión interna y el motor Wankel; las endotérmicas de flujo continuo, como los motores de autopropulsión y las turbinas de gas, y, finalmente, las máquinas exotérmicas de flujo continuo, como las instalaciones de turbina de vapor, y las exotérmicas volumétricas, como el motor Stirling. Posteriormente se desarrolla el concepto de cogeneración y el último capítulo trata de las pilas de combustible como alternativa a los motores térmicos actuales en el empleo de combustibles fósiles.
