Le dessin d'architecture au XVIIIe siècle connaît une diversité et atteint une perfection qui lui donnent quasiment son indépendance par rapport à l'art de construire dont, à l'origine, il n'était que l'au…xiliaire. Pratiqué d'abord comme un art mécanique, tracé de la coupe des pierres (stéréotomie), des plans, coupes et élévations de bâtiments, le dessin, également élaboré selon la technique illusionniste de la perspective, puis coloré comme un tableau, devint l'expression idéale d'un projet ou la représentation suggestive d'une vue d'édifice dans son environnement. Au trait, au lavis, à l'aquarelle, à la pierre noire, à la sanguine, à l'encre bistre ou grise, rehaussé de gouache, souvent transcrit et largement diffusé dans le public par les techniques de la gravure, le dessin d'architecture s'est trouvé collectionné par les amateurs, les princes et les institutions dans l'Europe entière. Témoins des échanges artistiques que l'esprit des Lumières favorisait, résultats des chantiers internationaux que les plus grands architectes se voyaient attribuer loin de leur patrie, les fonds de dessins où sont puisées les images de ce livre (Saint-Pétersbourg, Stockholm, Londres, Berlin, Vienne, Parme, Rome, Paris et plus tardivement New York, Washington) permettent de suivre, concrètement, l'évolution stylistique de la création architecturale au XVIIIe siècle - dans tous les domaines où elle intervient : architecture religieuse et civile, habitat, art des jardins, scénographie et ornements. Diderot écrivait : "Je vous conseille de vous méfier du talent d'un architecte qui n'est pas un grand dessinateur. " Sa mise en garde traduit non seulement le haut niveau d'exigence où était parvenue la formation des élèves architectes de l'époque : elle rappelle, avec les plus grands maîtres, les Bibiena, Piranèse, De Wailly, Boullée, que le dessin suggestif était devenu la composante initiale de l'architecture, celle de l'expression recherchée du projet et donc de l'échange entre l'artiste, le commanditaire et le public. L'ampleur du…parti, l'éclat artistique, le graphisme savant, le projet visionnaire : tout est exceptionnel dans cette manufacture, que son auteur rêvait d'entourer d'une ville idéale à la campagne. En renouvelant l'expression des formes, elle ennoblit une puissance financière redoutée, celle de la Ferme générale, chargée de collecter et de gérer, pour le roi, les ressources de l'impôt sur le sel, la gabelle. Mais, par le talent de son créateur, Claude-Nicolas Ledoux (1736-1806), et par la commande de Louis XV lui-même, elle est plus encore : un des symboles de la monarchie éclairée et des réformes que celle-ci promut pour enrayer la contestation dans la société des Lumières et répondre aux mutations économiques, sociales et philosophiques. Fermée à la fin du XIXe, la saline faillit périr au début du XXe siècle. Sa vie chaotique parmi les monuments historiques, jusqu'à la Ve République qui y crée un centre culturel, révèle à la fois la fascination qu'exerce son architecture, unique au monde, et la difficulté d'associer, aujourd'hui, un imaginaire historique à ses espaces.
