Imprint of cup ring to front cover. Toning and dust-spotting to edges of text block. Previous owner's stamp and blindstamp to front free endpaper. Torn bookplate and bookseller's ticket from the National Library Bindery Co. to front pastedown. Library pocket and borrow's ticket tipped in at rear endpaper and rear pastedown. Occasional penciled and inked library notation and stamps from Oglethorpe University Library to title page and to first several pages. Age-toning to pages throughout. Soiling to top edges of last 45 pages. Main body of is are free of notation. Binding is sound. Victor Cousin (November 1792 January 14, 1867) was a notable French philosopher who established the philosophy of "eclecticism." This briefly influential school of French philosophy integrated aspects of German idealism and Scottish Common Sense Realism. Serving as the administrator of public instruction for more than a decade, Cousin wielded significant influence on French educational policy.

The book has been bumped on the lower edge, causing a small area of crumpling at the base of the first 30 or so pages. In the year 1818, Victor Cousin delivered a course of lectures on the True, the Beautiful and the Good: this volume is a translation of that part of the course which is entitled The Beautiful.
