The years covered in this study were vital to an infant New Zealand, then facing a number of problems arising from a recent decision from London which resulted in the settlers taking control of "responsible Government" in the colony. This led to diffiiculties finding personnel with experince in governance in an area with a sparse and scattered population, only a few established urban centers, poor communications, political and economic challengers, Maori/settler land problems, threatened and actual conflict. while two successive Governors. Gore Browne and George Grey, represented Britain's colonial interests. This is an important work by Professor Dalton who, at the time of publication, held the History seat at the Townsville University. The book is in excellent condition throughout, no inscriptions, illustrations two portraits (govenors) and four maps. Light red covers also excellent. VG DJ has few short edge tears.
