"In dieser neuen Auflage sind nur… einige Kleinigkeiten geändert und einige unbedeutende Zusätze gemacht worden". - Wolff wollte, unterstützt von den herrlichen, an Grandvilles "Bilder aus dem Staats- und Familienleben der Thiere" u.ä. erinnernden Illustrationen und durchaus nicht unkritisch, die "Blüthe deutscher (studirender) Jugend . ohne Schminke und Aufputz . zeigen". Er beschreibt das Wesen des deutschen Studenten, seine Sprache und Tracht, Gebräuche, die zu verschwinden drohen, die Lebensalter der Studenten vom "Studenten-Embryo" über den Fuchs, den Brandfuchs, den jungen und den alten Burschen bis zum bemoosten Haupt. Die letzten Kapitel behandeln das "Staatswesen der Studenten" und die "Doctorpromotion". All dies wird witzig illustriert durch Tiere in Menschenkleidern in der Art des Grandville. Der Name des Künstlers "J. G. Apelles" ist ein unaufgelöstes Pseudonym. - Goed. XVII, 1779, 76; Hayn/Gotendorf VI, 214; Erman/Horn I, 16896; Rümann 2752. - Sauberes Exemplar.
