Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. 1st Edition. See photos for condition details. Hardcover with dust jacket. DJ is in rough shape with numerous large chips and tears, creases. The underside of the jacket was neatly reinforced with masking tape along the top and bottom edges, over the decades the glue has bled through to the front of the jacket. Despite the rough DJ it did a very fine job protecting the book underneath. Beveled red cloth boards are clean and bright and the gilt text shines like new. The only issues with the exterior of the book is a few small dents in the cloth. Internal binding is good and text pages are tight. No hinge issues, no handwriting, no library markings, no bookplates, no signatures present. Paper is toned due to age and there is some foxing which is mainly limited to the end pages. The second end page is the darkest out of all the toned pages.

Boards have moderate edge-wear with bumping to corners and rubbing to surfaces. Gilt lettering is darkened. Moderate sunning to spine and edges with crushing to spine ends. Book has a slight forward lean. Visible wear marks to boards.

In good green cloth boards, gilt titles and gilt vignette of birds sitting on a wire to front. The boards are flat and tight and fairly clean; spine ends and corners bumped and frayed. Lightly tanned free end papers; dedication on front free end paper. Tiny gilt and black bookseller's sticker from The Times Book Club, London on rear paste down. The text block has lightly tanned cut edges and the fore edge is deckled. The pages are firmly attached to boards and lightly foxed on most pages. With black and white illustrations - some on glossy paper - by J. A. Shepherd. Good condition. Without jacket.

Condition: Fair. No Edition Remarks. 63 pages. No dust jacket. Brown paper-covered boards with cream spine. Colour illustrated plates by G Denholm Armour. Pages have slight foxing, tanning and minor thumbing. Slight gutter cracking. Binding is firm. Foxing and tanning more noticeable towards start and end of book and on text block edges. Previous owners' inscriptions to front endpaper. Some heavier foxing on and near plates. Stains and wear to endpapers and pastedowns. Boards have some edge wear, with pronounced bumping and fraying to corners, while spine ends are extremely crushed and peeling with splits to joints. Spine is heavily sunned. Heavy surface tears and liquid stains to both boards. Rather scratched, rubbed and marked overall. Slight bowing and a mild forward lean.
