Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. Prior to World War I, printmaking in the United States was, with a few exceptions, primarily the domain of commercial enterprises that produced largely picturesque European scenes or depictions of popular towns on the East Coast. Prints of Minnesota scenes, especially by Minnesota artists, formed a very small part of American art exhibits. Robert Crump relates the fascinating story of Minnesota's graphic arts world and its growth from provincialism to part of a national movement, showing how art printing -- etchings, woodcuts, lithographs, drypoints, monotypes, and silk screens -- blossomed after the turn of the last century. He chronicles the support of the federal government during the 1930s and the important role played by local organisations such as the Minneapolis Institute of Art, the Walker Art Center, and the Minneapolis School of Art (now the Minneapolis College of Art and Design). This book offers short biographies of and sample prints by nearly two hundred printmakers, including Wanda Gag, Adolf Dehn, George Resler, Miriam Ibling, Syd Fossum, Gilbert Fletcher, and Gustav Goetsch.Crump's eye for memorable images makes the handsome volume a pleasure to behold for collectors and readers interested in Minnesota art. Notes on printing techniques and several appendices help newcomers appreciate the challenges of printmaking. Five yearbooks belonging to a seventh grade English teacher at Elkhardt Middle School in Richmond, Virginia. 1965-1966 is the earliest, and 1969-1970 is the latest. Each is illustrated in red ink on an off-white background; approx. 50 pages each; black and white; very good.~~Elkhardt had a complicated history due to multiple changes to name and location. This Elkhardt Middle School, of 6300 Hull Street Road, was built in 1914 as Manchester High School. In the early 1960s Manchester High moved to another location and the building was renamed Elkhardt Middle. With the contentious and racially motivated annexation of part of Chesterfield County in 1970, the school moved to a new location on the Southside of Richmond and was renamed Elkhardt-Thompson. This school was closed and scheduled for demolition in 2020, with the original site now hosting the newly built River City Middle School.~~Robert Loving Crump (1929-2017) was a lifelong English teacher in Chesterfield County, Virginia. He never married, and described the loves of his life as teaching and reading. Also the sponsor of the Drama Club - the Elkhardt Players during his years there, he was clearly a popular teacher. Notes from his students describe him as swell, a great teacher, and a cool dude. ~~These yearbooks capture an interesting and volatile time in Richmond's social and educational history.
