Hardback. Condition: New. In When Sex Changed, Layne Parish Craig analyzes the ways literary texts responded to the political, economic, sexual, and social values put forward by the birth control movements of the 1910s to the 1930s in the United States and Great Britain. Discussion of contraception and related topics (including…feminism, religion, and eugenics) changed the way that writers depicted women, marriage, and family life. Tracing this shift, Craig compares disparate responses to the birth control controversy, from early skepticism by mainstream feminists, reflected in Charlotte Perkins Gilman's Herland, to concern about the movement's race and class implications suggested in Nella Larsen's Quicksand, to enthusiastic speculation about contraception's political implications, as in Virginia Woolf's Three Guineas. While these texts emphasized birth control's potential to transform marriage and family life and emancipate women from the "slavery" of constant childbearing, birth control advocates also used less-than-liberatory language that excluded the poor, the mentally ill, non-whites, and others. Ultimately, Craig argues, the debates that began in these early political and literary texts-texts that document both the birth control movement's idealism and its exclusionary rhetoric-helped shape the complex legacy of family planning and women's rights with which the United States and the United Kingdom still struggle.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. There has been and continues to be a fascination with the Tarot. As an artist who firmly believe that her talent comes from a divine place, a Creative Source, and is a spiritually oriented form of expression, I have been naturally drawn to things on a metaphysical plane all my life. The Taro…t has been one of those interests. The Tarot has been both an intrigue and an inspiration for me as an artist. "Beyond being a set of symbol-filled images, most decks also serve as a vehicle for artistic expression, and provide ample opportunity for the deck's creator to include their personal interpretation and character while still keeping within the traditional Tarot structure." (Ciri Marchetti, from Josephine Ellenshaw's "Easy Tarot Handbook") This particular interpretation of the Tarot is my own vehicle for artistic expression and is done in a way that will enable others to join in the creative process with me. Presenting these images in the form of a coloring book will give all of us ample opportunity for such expression. Come, create with me! "The Tarot embodies symbolical presentations of universal ideas, behind which lie all the implicits of the human mind, and it is in this sense that they contain secret doctrine, which is the realization by the few of truths embedded in the consciousness of all." (A.E. Waite, creator of the most popular of the Tarot decks in our times.) For those of you who wish to challenge themselves on a deeper level that many coloring books may not provide, this series of three volumes, that contain the full deck of both the Major Arcana and the Minor Arcana, will delight you. By choosing your own way to fill each image with colors, you will be participating in that act of co-creation and also honoring the tradition from which these images were inspired. This can become a form of meditation as well as creative entertainment for you as you form your own interpretations of each image by the colors you choose. ".pictures are like doors which open into unexpected chambers." (A.E.Waite) So I invite you to open these pages, these doors, and see what awaits for you within your own marvelous and divine imaginations! Color! Create! And enjoy! This item is printed on demand. Shipping may be from our UK warehouse or from our Australian or US warehouses, depending on stock availability.
