Assai poco conosciuta è la biografia di Petrus Costalius, nome latinizzato di Pierre Cousteau, umanista e giurista parigino del XVI secolo di origini ebraiche. Visse sicuramente a Vienna ed a Lyon, ed oltre al presente testo di diritto romano si deve a lui "Pegma, cum narrationibus philosophicis", trattato di emblematica, ispirato all'Alciati, pubblicato a Lione nel 1555 sempre per i tipi di Bonhomme, ed il poema "De Pace carmen", stampato nel 1559. Alcune fonti gli attribuiscono anche il saggio rabbinico "Typus Messiae et Christi Domini ex veterum prophetarum praesensionibus contra Judaeorum" (1554) per il nome dell'autore, Petro Costo, possibile pseudonimo di Coustau.
