Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. First edition, first impression. Some slight edge wear to top and bottom of classic Gollancz yellow jacket and spine, corners very slightly bruised, not price clipped (28s £1.40), no inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg++ copy. 159pp. 'The Last and the First' is Ivy Compton-Burnett's (1884-1969), posthumous novel, published in 1971, two years after her death. The work, complete if possibly awaiting revision, was untitled when it was discovered, and was so named as appropriate for her last novel, and also because of the Biblical quotation (Matthew 20:16) uttered (not for the first time in her canon), by one of the characters.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book argues that the United States should grant independence to the Philippines, rather than adopting a colonial policy. The author believes that colonialism would be detrimental to both the Philippines and the US, and that it would ultimately lead to the decline of the American republic. The author also discusses the history of colonialism, and the various arguments for and against it. The author's main argument against colonialism is that it is inherently unjust. He believes that all people have the right to self-government, and that it is wrong to impose foreign rule on them. He also argues that colonialism is economically inefficient, and that it stifles economic development in the colonies. The author also discusses the various arguments in favor of colonialism. He acknowledges that colonialism can sometimes bring economic benefits to the colonizing country, but he argues that these benefits are outweighed by the costs. He also argues that colonialism can sometimes be justified on humanitarian grounds, but he believes that this is only the case when the colony is in a state of chaos or anarchy. In conclusion, the author believes that the United States should grant independence to the Philippines. He believes that this is the only just and moral course of action, and that it is also in the best interests of the United States. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
