Condition: New. SB xvi+251 pp + Map 2017 N&MP Reprint of 1907 Original EditionPublished Price £12.50 These lectures are rated as an outstanding contribution to the literature on Waterloo. The author of this book set out to present and analyse all available facts, and to achieve this he made a deliberate policy of consulting English, German, Belgian and French sources on the battle and thus produced a balanced and objective account. His work was translated into German and French and earned the praise of such as von Moltke the Elder. Subsequently French and German authorities offered further evidence which Chesney was able to incorporate in the later English editions. This reprint is of the last (fourth) and most comprehensive edition.

1st separate edition (Bleiler, p. 42). 64 pp. 12mo. 17 cm x 11.5 cm. The 'Battle of Dorking' was, apparently, written to document the need "for a complete reorganization of the British military system." The story's effect, after its initial (& anonymous) magazine publication in 1871, can be gauged by the fact that it drew a public, published response from Prime Minister Gladstone, who, many would say, was somewhat defensive therein. Of more importance to us today, the 'Battle of Dorking' also occasioned the emergence of a distinct sub-genre in the Science Fiction field, i.e., the "prophetic (or cautionary) novel of future war. Its distinguishing characteristic is a richly detailed description of an imminent war." And while many would later follow in Chesney's footsteps, "none of them would have Chesney's impact." [Gunn "Alternate Worlds", p. 62] An important work, not often found in original wrappers. Spine sunned. Front wrapper with oval bookseller stamp to lower right corner. Bookplates. A VG copy. Rebound in purple muslin cloth, gilt stamped title lettering to spine, with original printed purple front wrapper bound-in.

The Expedition for the Survey of the Rivers Euphrates and Tigris (18351837) was a major British scientific and geopolitical mission led by Francis Rawdon Chesney. Its primary objective was to determine if the Euphrates and Tigris rivers were navigable by steamships to establish a faster "overland" trade and mail route to India. Chesney explored the Euphrates twice, at first alone, on a raft, in secret and at great risk (he frequently came under fire from hostile Arabs) and later by steamer, although the second attempt was no less fraught with difficulty than the first (the Tigris was wrecked and there were numerous physical obstacles to overcome). He was sent to China before finishing this work and part of the manuscript was lost, hence only two volumes were published (four are called for on the title-page). In addition to Iraq, there is considerable information on Turkey, Syria, Palestine, Arabia (including Mecca), the Nejd, Hadramaut and Oman. Chesney's record of exploration of the Euphrates as an alternative route to India. Ironically his earlier report on the feasibility of the Suez Canal provided the basis for de Lesseps' successful project. First two text volumes only but all published as the manuscript was lost when he was subsequently sent to China. "Includes minute surveys of the history, geography, geology of the areas traversed, but does not includes a day-by-day account of the expedition" (Blackmer). His later work "Narrative of the Euphrates Expedition" (1868) concludes the overall narrative. (Atabey 234; Blackmer 337).
